  1. The Maiden Tower (Giz Galasi): Located in the centre of Baku, the Maiden Tower is an ancient fortress that was constructed in the 12th century and is listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally thought to be a Zoroastrian temple, the landmark remains a mystery as the exact purpose of the tower is still unknown.
  2. Martyrs’ Lane: The Martyrs’ Lane is a memorial to those who lost their lives during the Nagorno-Karabakh War (also known as the Artsakh War). Located in Baku, the memorial is a popular tourist attraction and features a museum and an eternal flame.
  3. Winter Park: Built in the 1940s, the Winter Park is a public park found in the centre of Baku. Spread over an area of 49 hectares, the park is home to a variety of plants, trees and flowers as well as several monuments. 
  4. Heydar Aliyev Center: Built-in 2012, the Heydar Aliyev Center is an architectural masterpiece located in Baku. The building has been designed by Zaha Hadid and is home to several exhibitions as well as a conference hall and a library.
  5. Nohur lake: Nohur lake is a scenic lake located in the mountains near Kelabad. It was created through the sudden filling of a sinkhole caused by an earthquake and is now widely recognized as the deepest lake in Azerbaijan. The lake can be easily accessed from Baku and is a popular tourist attraction.
  6. Dalga Beach: Located in the Bay of Baku, Dalga Beach is a popular beach situated close to Baku’s harbour. The beach is known for its crystal clear waters and golden sand and is one of the most popular attractions for tourists in Azerbaijan. 
  7. Yanar Dag: Yanar Dag (which translates to “burning mountain”) is a natural landmark found in Azerbaijan. The mountain has been burning continuously since the 1950s due to rocky outcroppings that have been exposed to natural gas and have caused it to ignite.

Food to try

  1. Plov (Pilaf): Plov is a staple of Azerbaijani cuisine and is traditionally made with rice, carrots, potatoes, onions and sometimes mutton or beef. It is served with a variety of garnishes and side dishes, such as raisins, currants, chestnuts, and herbs.
  2. Shish Kabab: This popular dish is made from cubes of marinated lamb or beef, skewered and grilled over a charcoal fire. It is usually served with grilled vegetables and sometimes with a side of grilled flatbread.
  3. Kebab: Kebabs are a mainstay in Azerbaijani cuisine. This dish consists of marinated pieces of beef, lamb or veal, sometimes mixed with onions or peppers, grilled over a charcoal fire. 
  4. Dolma: Dolma is a traditional dish made from ground meat, rice and spices. It is typically cooked with vegetables such as eggplants, bell peppers, squash, and tomatoes in a flavoured broth.
  5. Guba Soup: Guba Soup is a thick, tomato-based soup made with vegetables, lamb, and chickpeas. It is usually served with flatbread.
  6. Halva: Halva is a dessert made of semolina, butter, sugar and nuts. It is served with a variety of toppings and fruits, such as dates, apricots, or raisins.
