Food to try in Sri Lanka

Rice and curry

The everyday main meal, most often eaten at lunch. A plate of rice comes with several small curries, such as dhal (lentils), vegetables, fish or chicken, plus a spicy coconut sambol.

Hoppers (appa)

Thin, bowl-shaped pancakes made from fermented rice flour and coconut milk, crisp at the edges. Try an egg hopper, usually eaten at breakfast or in the evening from small shops and street stalls.

Kottu roti

Chopped flatbread fried on a hot griddle with vegetables, egg, chicken or beef. It is a popular evening street food, and you will often hear the metal blades chopping it before you see the stall.

String hoppers (idiyappam)

Small steamed nests of thin rice-flour noodles. They are common at breakfast or dinner, served with dhal, coconut sambol and a mild curry.

Kiribath (milk rice)

Rice cooked in coconut milk, pressed flat and cut into diamond shapes. It is eaten on special days, such as the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, often with a chilli and onion paste called lunu miris.

Ceylon tea

Black tea grown in the island's hill country. Locals drink it through the day, usually strong with milk and plenty of sugar, and you can visit tea estates in the hills.
