Why visit Portugal

Portugal suits independent travellers who want city breaks with a coastal feel. You can start in Lisbon, the capital, then head north to Porto, a coastal city. The best months are June, July, August and September, for both the country and Porto. One honest limitation: those best months all fall in summer, so the ideal window is fairly narrow. Outside it, plan with more flexibility. Portugal uses the Euro, and Portuguese is the official language.

  • A long, reliable summer season

June, July, August and September are the best months to visit Portugal. This is the warm, settled part of the year for beach days, city walks and long evenings outdoors. The same months suit both the capital and the coast.

  • Porto on the Atlantic coast

Porto is a coastal city of about 273979 people, so it feels smaller and easier to explore on foot than many European cities. Its best months match the rest of the country: June to September, with August and July at the top.

  • Lisbon, a capital in Southern Europe

Lisbon is Portugal's capital and the natural starting point for most trips. You can combine it with Porto on one itinerary, with a city break in the capital and a coastal city in the north.

  • A compact country to cover

Portugal covers 92090 km² and has a population of 11424031. That size makes it realistic to see more than one region in a single trip, especially if you drive. Traffic keeps to the right, as in most of Europe.

  • Simple practicalities for Europeans

Portugal uses the Euro, and sockets are type C and F at 230 V, so many European travellers need no adapter. The emergency number is 112, and Portuguese is the official language.

Where to go in Portugal

City guides with their own best months and weather.

Where to stay

One good base in each main city and who it suits.

Baixa

Porto

Good for first-timers, sightseeing, transport links

The central downtown area around Avenida dos Aliados has grand old buildings, cafés and the São Bento train station. Most main sights are within walking distance, and metro lines meet here. Streets near Rua Galeria de Paris get loud late at night, especially at weekends.

Food to try in Portugal

Pastel de nata

A small custard tart in crisp, flaky pastry, often dusted with cinnamon. Cafés and bakeries across Portugal sell it all day, and locals often eat one with a short coffee.

Bacalhau (salted cod)

Dried, salted cod that is soaked, then baked, grilled or mixed with potato and egg. Menus across the country serve it, and many families eat it at Christmas Eve dinner.

Sardinhas assadas

Whole sardines grilled over charcoal and often served on bread or with boiled potatoes. They are a summer favourite, especially at street festivals in Lisbon and other coastal towns.

Francesinha

A heavy sandwich from Porto, layered with meats, covered in melted cheese and soaked in a tomato and beer sauce. It usually comes with fries and makes a filling meal.

Caldo verde

A simple soup of potato and finely shredded kale, often topped with a slice of chouriço sausage. It is a common starter and a popular late-night dish at festivals.

Port wine

A sweet, fortified wine made from grapes grown in the Douro Valley in the north. It ages in cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river from Porto, where many offer tastings.

Know before you go

  • Plugs and voltage: Portugal uses plug types C and F, the round two-pin plugs common in much of Europe. The supply is 230 V. Bring an adapter if your plugs differ, and check your devices accept 230 V.
  • Driving side: Traffic drives on the right in Portugal. If you come from a country that drives on the left, take extra care at roundabouts and junctions for the first few days.
  • Emergency number: Call 112 for police, ambulance or fire services. It is the same emergency number used across the European Union and is free to call from any phone.
  • Currency: Portugal uses the Euro. If you are travelling on from another Euro country, you can keep using the same notes and coins.
  • Language: The official language is Portuguese. A few basic words, such as greetings and thank you, are useful and polite in shops, cafés and on public transport.
  • Calling code: The country calling code is +351. Add it before the local number when you call a Portuguese number from abroad or from a foreign SIM card.
  • Time zones: Portugal has 2 time zones: UTC and UTC-01:00. If your trip covers more than one part of the country, check the local time before you book transfers or connecting flights.
