About Trujillo

Trujillo is a coastal city in Peru with about 919,899 people. It is not the capital, but it offers a mix of city sights and ancient history. The Historic Centre has the Plaza de Armas, Trujillo Cathedral, Casa de la Emancipación and Casa Urquiaga. Nearby are large archaeological sites such as Chan Chan and the Huacas del Sol y de la Luna. Huanchaco adds time by the sea. The best months to go are June to September.

How many days do you need in Trujillo?

Allow half a day each for Chan Chan and Huanchaco, and 2–3 hours for the Huacas del Sol y de la Luna. The Historic Centre sights take 30 minutes to 1 hour each. El Brujo and Museo Cao need a full day.

Top attractions in Trujillo

  1. 1Chan Chan Archaeological Zone

    Half a day

    Huanchaco

Chan Chan was the capital of the Chimú kingdom and is often called the largest adobe city in the Americas. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most visitors walk through the restored Nik An (Tschudi) palace, with its carved walls of fish, birds and waves, and stop at the site museum nearby.

  2. 2Huacas del Sol y de la Luna

    2–3 hours

    Moche

These two large Moche temples stand in the desert just south of the city. On a guided walk through Huaca de la Luna you can see layers of painted friezes that still show their original colours. Huaca del Sol is seen from outside, and the Huacas de Moche Museum at the entrance explains the finds.

  3. 3Huanchaco

    Half a day

    Huanchaco

Huanchaco is a beach town a short ride from the centre. Fishermen still use caballitos de totora, small reed boats, and you can see them stacked upright along the sand. It is also a popular place to learn to surf and to eat ceviche by the sea.

  4. 4Plaza de Armas

    1 hour

    Historic Centre

The main square is surrounded by colonial mansions painted in bright colours. In the middle stands the Freedom Monument, a large sculpture celebrating independence. It is the easiest place to start a walk through the old town.

  5. 5Trujillo Cathedral

    30 minutes–1 hour

    Historic Centre

The cathedral on the Plaza de Armas has a bright yellow front that is the best-known image of the city. Inside you can see gilded altars and colonial religious paintings.

  6. 6Casa de la Emancipación

    30 minutes–1 hour

    Historic Centre

This colonial mansion is linked with Trujillo's declaration of independence from Spain. Today it is a cultural centre run by a bank and hosts art and history exhibitions. It is a good chance to see the inside of an old Trujillo house with its patios and period rooms.

  7. 7Casa Urquiaga

    30 minutes

    Historic Centre

Casa Urquiaga is a restored colonial mansion on the Plaza de Armas, now owned by Peru's Central Reserve Bank. Visitors can see its furnished rooms, courtyards and a small collection of pre-Hispanic objects.

  8. 8Huaca Arco Iris (Huaca del Dragón)

    30 minutes–1 hour

    La Esperanza

This small temple has thick adobe walls covered in reliefs of a rainbow-like figure and mythical creatures. It is compact and well preserved, so it is easy to add on the way to or from Chan Chan.

  9. 9Huaca Esmeralda

    30 minutes

    Trujillo

Huaca Esmeralda is a small Chimú temple between the city centre and Chan Chan, with walls decorated with fish and sea birds. It is often visited on the same trip as Chan Chan.

  10. 10El Brujo Archaeological Complex and Museo Cao

    Full day

    Magdalena de Cao

This coastal site north of Trujillo includes Huaca Cao Viejo, a Moche temple with painted reliefs of warriors and prisoners. The museum shows the tattooed mummy of the Lady of Cao, a powerful Moche woman found here. Most people visit on a day trip from Trujillo with a guide or driver.

Where to stay in Trujillo

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Centro Histórico

Good for first-timers, sightseeing, short stays

The colonial grid around the Plaza de Armas has painted mansions, churches and most museums within walking distance. Colectivos and taxis to Chan Chan, Huanchaco and the Moche temples leave from nearby. Daytime traffic is loud, and some side streets feel empty at night, so taxis after dark are wise.

California

Good for couples, business travellers, dining

A modern, middle-class area southwest of the centre, with shopping malls, cafés and many of the city's newer restaurants. Streets are calmer and feel more polished than the old town. You will need taxis to reach the historic sights and the beach.

Urbanización El Golf

Good for families, quiet, longer stays

A leafy, upmarket residential area in Víctor Larco Herrera district, with wide streets and a peaceful feel. It works well if you want rest and space between day trips. There is little to see on foot and few places to eat within walking distance, so you depend on taxis.

Buenos Aires

Good for sea views, local life, budget-minded

A seafront neighbourhood in Víctor Larco Herrera with a promenade and local seafood spots, much less touristy than Huanchaco. It sits closer to the city centre than Huanchaco does. The sea here is often rough and not good for swimming, and the promenade is quiet after dark.

Getting to and around Trujillo

From the airport
Trujillo's airport has no train or metro link. Most visitors take a taxi or a pre-booked hotel transfer to the centre. Agree the taxi fare before you set off.
Public transport
Trujillo has no metro or tram. Locals use minibuses called combis and micros, and taxis are easy to find. Taxis have no meters, so agree the fare before you get in.
On foot
The compact Centro Histórico is easy on foot. Plaza de Armas, the Cathedral, Casa de la Emancipación and Casa Urquiaga are close together. Chan Chan, Huanchaco and Moche's huacas need transport.

Food to try in Trujillo

Shambar

A thick soup of wheat, beans, peas and smoked pork, finished with fresh mint. Trujillo families and local restaurants traditionally serve it on Mondays.

Ceviche

Raw fish cured in lime juice with onion and chilli, often served with sweet potato and corn. Locals often eat it at lunchtime at the seafood restaurants in nearby Huanchaco.

Cabrito a la norteña

Young goat slowly stewed with chicha de jora, coriander and chilli, usually served with beans and rice. It is a classic dish of Peru's north coast, eaten at family meals and celebrations.

Sopa teóloga

A rich soup of turkey or chicken broth thickened with bread, milk and cheese. It is a traditional Trujillo speciality, often made for special occasions.

Frito trujillano

Fried pork served with fried cassava, corn and a sharp onion salsa. Locals usually eat it as a hearty weekend breakfast.
