Europe: when and where to go

This hub covers 20 European countries, from Finland and Norway in the north to Spain and Cyprus in the south. In the north the best window is short: Denmark and Finland peak in June, and Norway in June and August. Further south it moves away from high summer, with Spain and Cyprus best in April, May, October and November, and Croatia, Italy and Montenegro in June, September and October.

When is the best time to visit Europe?

June and September are the safest choices for most of Europe. They appear more often than any other month in the best-month lists for the 20 countries we cover. The north has a short window: Denmark and Finland list only June. The far south works outside summer. Spain and Cyprus list April, May, October and November as their best months.

Where in Europe is good to visit in January?

Spain, Gibraltar and Cyprus rank highest in Europe in January, and again in December and February. Be realistic, though. None of the 20 countries in our data has a winter month among its best months. These 3 are simply the least bad options in winter. They are not at their peak.

Is Europe good in August?

Yes, for much of central, western and northern Europe. Gibraltar, Romania and France rank highest in August. Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Poland and Switzerland also list August as a best month. The south-west is different. Spain and Cyprus do not list August at all, so save them for spring or autumn.

Where should I go in Europe in October?

Cyprus, Spain and Gibraltar rank highest in October. Croatia, Italy, Montenegro and Vatican City also list October as a best month, so the Mediterranean is a good choice. If you travel later, in November, Cyprus and Spain still rank highest. Both list November among their best months.
