What to see, where to stay and the best time to visit Tirana, Albania.

Tirana is Albania's capital, with 389323 people living in a compact, walkable centre. It's a city of contrasts: communist-era bunkers and museums sit next to colourful tower blocks, lively cafés and bars in Blloku, and green parks. Expect a budget-friendly stop with good food and an easy pace. The best months to visit are April, June, September and October, when temperatures are comfortable for walking around and sitting outside.
Tirana's main sights can be covered on foot in 2 days, with time for a half-day trip up Mount Dajti by cable car. A third day suits those who want to explore neighbourhoods like Pazari i Ri or relax in the Grand Park.
City centre
Tirana's main square is a large open plaza named after Albania's national hero, whose statue on horseback stands at one end. Most central sights sit around its edge, so it is the natural place to start a walk through the city.

This museum sits in an underground Cold War bunker near Skanderbeg Square. It tells the story of the communist-era police and secret police, and of the people they watched, arrested and punished. It is an easy, central introduction to Albania's recent past.

Also called the Museum of Secret Surveillance, this building was once used by the communist-era secret police. Exhibits show the listening devices, cameras and files used to spy on ordinary citizens.
Skanderbeg Square
A small Ottoman-era mosque at the edge of Skanderbeg Square, known for the painted frescoes on its walls and porch. It survived the communist ban on religion, and it is still an active place of worship, so dress modestly.
Mount Dajti
A cable car runs from the edge of the city up Mount Dajti, with wide views over Tirana on the way. At the top there are walking paths, restaurants and cooler air. Check the weather first, as cloud can hide the view.
South of the centre
A large park around an artificial lake, popular with locals for walking, running and relaxing. A path loops around the lake through woods, and there are cafés near the entrances.
Blloku
Under communism this area was closed to ordinary people and reserved for the party elite. Today it is Tirana's main area for cafés, bars and restaurants, and it is liveliest in the evening. You can also see the outside of the former home of the communist leader Enver Hoxha.
City centre
Tirana's Orthodox cathedral is a modern building with a large dome and a separate bell tower. Visitors can see the interior with its icons and mosaics when services are not taking place.

Good for first-timers, sightseeing, short stays
The city centre around Skanderbeg Square puts you within walking distance of the main museums, the mosque, the clock tower and the Pyramid. It is the easiest base for getting around on foot and for catching buses to other towns. The main roads around the square carry heavy traffic, so rooms facing them can be noisy.
Good for nightlife, cafés, young travellers
This former communist leaders' quarter, just south of the centre, is now full of bars, cafés, restaurants and shops. It is the place to stay if you want evenings out close to your door. Music and crowds continue late, especially at weekends, so light sleepers may struggle.
Good for food lovers, couples, local atmosphere
The New Bazaar area, a short walk east of Skanderbeg Square, centres on a restored market hall with fruit and vegetable stalls, small restaurants and colourful buildings. It feels more local than Blloku and is good for long dinners and morning market visits. Market deliveries and restaurant terraces can bring early and late noise.
Good for longer stays, families, residential feel
This residential district west of Blloku has quieter streets, everyday shops and neighbourhood cafés. It suits travellers who want to live like a local and still walk to the centre. Most sights need a longer walk or a taxi, and there is less to see on your doorstep.
Good for families, runners, quiet
The area beside the Grand Park and its artificial lake, south of the centre, gives easy access to walking and running paths and green space. It is calmer than the centre while staying close to Blloku. Some streets climb uphill, and choice of places to stay is smaller than in the centre.

Two days cover the main sights. Skanderbeg Square, Et'hem Bey Mosque and the Resurrection Cathedral each take 30 minutes to an hour. Bunk'Art 2, the House of Leaves, Grand Park and Blloku each need 1–2 hours. Add a half day for the Dajti Ekspres Cable Car up Mount Dajti if you want mountain views outside the city centre.
