About Medellín

Medellín is a large inland city in Colombia, home to 2,529,403 people. A visit can mix the centre and the hills. In La Candelaria you can see Plaza Botero and the Museo de Antioquia. Comuna 13 in San Javier takes half a day, and the Metrocable rises to Santo Domingo. Laureles suits walkers and longer stays, and Manila suits backpackers. The best months to visit are January and March.

How many days do you need in Medellín?

Allow half a day each for Comuna 13 and Parque Arví. Plan 1–3 hours for each museum, Jardín Botánico or Parque Explora. Add a full day if you want the trip to Guatapé and El Peñol.

Top attractions in Medellín

  1. 1Comuna 13

    half a day

    San Javier

A hillside neighbourhood in western Medellín known for its street art, music and covered outdoor escalators. Most people visit on a guided walking tour led by local residents, who explain how the area changed after years of violence.

  2. 2Plaza Botero

    1 hour

    La Candelaria (Centro)

An open square in the city centre filled with large bronze sculptures donated by Medellín-born artist Fernando Botero. It sits right outside the Museo de Antioquia, so most visitors combine the two. The area is busy with street vendors, so keep an eye on your belongings.

  3. 3Museo de Antioquia

    2–3 hours

    La Candelaria (Centro)

The city's main art museum, with a large collection of paintings and sculptures by Fernando Botero and rooms on the history and art of the Antioquia region. It is a good way to understand the region before exploring the rest of the city.

  4. 4Metrocable

    1–2 hours

    Santo Domingo

Medellín's cable car lines are part of the public metro system and carry residents up to hillside neighbourhoods. A ride gives wide views over the valley and shows how the city connects its poorer districts to the centre.

  5. 5Parque Arví

    half a day

    Santa Elena

A large nature reserve on the forested hills east of the city, with walking trails, picnic areas and a small farmers' market. It is cooler than the city below, so bring a light jacket.

  6. 6Museo Casa de la Memoria

    1–2 hours

    Centro

A museum about the armed conflict in Colombia and in Medellín, told through the stories of victims and survivors. It is serious and moving, and gives context for what you see in neighbourhoods like Comuna 13.

  7. 7Jardín Botánico de Medellín

    1–2 hours

    Aranjuez

A free botanical garden north of the centre, with tropical plants, an orchid collection and a large wooden canopy structure called the Orquideorama. It is a quiet green break from the traffic, and it sits next to Parque Explora.

  8. 8Parque Explora

    2–3 hours

    Aranjuez

An interactive science museum with hands-on exhibits and a freshwater aquarium focused on Amazon and Colombian species. It works well for families and on rainy afternoons.

  9. 9Pueblito Paisa

    1 hour

    Cerro Nutibara

A small replica of a traditional Antioquian village on top of Cerro Nutibara, a hill in the middle of the city. Most people come for the view across Medellín rather than the replica itself.

  10. 10Guatapé and El Peñol

    full day

    Guatapé (day trip)

A day trip east of Medellín to El Peñol, a huge granite rock you can climb by a long staircase for views over a lake full of islands. Nearby Guatapé is a small town where houses are decorated with colourful painted panels called zócalos.

Where to stay in Medellín

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Laureles

Good for longer stays, local feel, walkers

Laureles is a flat, residential area with tree-lined streets, small parks and a more local daily life than El Poblado. Walking and cycling are easy, and there are plenty of cafés and bars, especially around La 70 and La 33. It is further from the Poblado nightlife, and some parts lack direct metro access, so you may rely on taxis.

Manila

Good for budget travellers, backpackers

Manila is a small area on the lower, flatter edge of El Poblado with many hostels, cafés and casual restaurants. It gives you Poblado's convenience at a calmer pace than the Parque Lleras area. Choice of places to eat late at night is smaller, and some streets feel quiet after dark.

Envigado

Good for families, quiet, local life

Envigado is a separate town just south of El Poblado, with a traditional main square, local restaurants and a slower, family feel. It has metro access and feels less touristy than central areas. The distance to Laureles and the city centre means longer trips, and there is less nightlife.

Sabaneta

Good for budget, quiet, local experience

Sabaneta is a small municipality further south, known for its lively central park and traditional eateries. It is calm and connected by metro, so you can reach the rest of the city without a car. It is the furthest option here from El Poblado and Laureles, so you will spend more time travelling.

Getting to and around Medellín

From the airport
Medellín's José María Córdova airport sits outside the city, so most visitors reach the centre by taxi, official airport shuttle, or a private transfer van. No route data with times or prices is available here, so confirm current options on arrival.
Public transport
Medellín has a metro line plus Metrocable gondola lines that link hillside areas like Santo Domingo to the centre, and feeder buses cover other districts. The metro is the easiest way to move around; buy a rechargeable card and avoid relying on buses alone if you don't speak Spanish.
On foot
La Candelaria (Centro) is walkable, with Plaza Botero, Museo de Antioquia and Museo Casa de la Memoria within easy reach of each other on foot.

Food to try in Medellín

Bandeja paisa

This is the signature plate of the Antioquia region. It piles beans, rice, ground beef, chorizo, fried egg, plantain, avocado and pork crackling on one plate, usually eaten at lunch.

Arepa de queso

A thick corn cake filled or topped with cheese. Locals eat it for breakfast or as a snack alongside coffee, often from street stalls or bakeries.

Mondongo

A hearty soup made with tripe, potatoes and vegetables. Families often cook it for weekend lunches or special gatherings.

Sancocho

A thick stew of meat, plantain, yuca and corn. It is common on Sundays, when families share a large pot together.

Chorizo with arepa

Grilled sausage served with a corn arepa and a dipping sauce. It is a popular street food eaten any time of day, especially at markets.

Buñuelos

Deep fried balls of cheese dough, slightly sweet and crisp outside. They appear around Christmas but are sold year round as a snack with hot chocolate.
