About San Pedro La Laguna

San Pedro La Laguna is a small town of about 11,828 people on the shore of Lake Atitlán in Guatemala, north of San Pedro Volcano. Most visits revolve around nature: hiking the volcano, kayaking from the docks in the lower town, and taking boats to nearby villages such as San Juan La Laguna and Santiago Atitlán. The upper town has the central plaza, the Church of San Pedro Apóstol and the Municipal Market. The best months to visit are December, January and February.

How many days do you need in San Pedro La Laguna?

The volcano hike takes most of a day. San Juan La Laguna, Santiago Atitlán and San Marcos La Laguna each need half a day. Add a 2–3 hour coffee farm tour and time on the lake. A few days covers it all without rushing.

Top attractions in San Pedro La Laguna

  1. 1San Pedro Volcano (Volcán San Pedro)

    Most of a day

    South of town

This forested volcano rises directly behind the town. The trail is steep and climbs through coffee plots and cloud forest to views over Lake Atitlán and the other volcanoes. Most people go with a local guide and start early, before clouds build up.

  2. 2San Juan La Laguna

    Half a day

    San Juan La Laguna

The next village along the shore is easy to reach by tuk-tuk or on foot. It is known for its women's weaving cooperatives, which use natural dyes, and for colourful murals and small art galleries. Many cooperatives show how the dyes and textiles are made.

  3. 3Lakefront and kayaking on Lake Atitlán

    1–2 hours

    Lower town, by the docks

Kayaks and paddleboards can be hired along the shore in San Pedro. Mornings are usually the best time to go out, because the water is calmer then. In the afternoon the wind, called the Xocomil, can make the lake choppy.

  4. 4Church of San Pedro Apóstol

    30 minutes

    Upper town, central plaza

The town's white Catholic church stands on the main square in the upper, more local part of town. It is a short visit, but it gives you a look at everyday Tz'utujil Maya life away from the backpacker area by the lake.

  5. 5Municipal Market

    1 hour

    Upper town

This is the local market near the centre, where residents buy fruit, vegetables, tortillas and household goods. It is a good place to try local snacks and to see traditional dress worn every day.

  6. 6Coffee farm tour

    2–3 hours

    Around San Pedro

Coffee grows on the slopes around the town. Local cooperatives and guides offer tours that follow the bean from plant to cup, often including roasting and a tasting.

  7. 7Santiago Atitlán

    Half a day

    Santiago Atitlán

This larger town is a short public boat ride across the bay. It is known for its busy market, its old colonial church and the shrine of Maximón, a folk saint honoured by local Maya communities.

  8. 8San Marcos La Laguna

    Half a day

    San Marcos La Laguna

This small village is a short boat ride away and is known for yoga and meditation centres. Many visitors walk to the Cerro Tzankujil nature reserve, where rocks and a wooden platform let you jump into the lake.

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Panajachel Dock

Good for first-timers, nightlife, backpackers

This lakeside area around the dock for boats to Panajachel is where most travellers first arrive. Cafés, bars, tour agents and Spanish schools are all within a short walk, so it is easy to settle in and meet people. Bars can stay loud late into the night, especially at weekends.

Centro

Good for culture, local life, budget travellers

The town centre sits up the hill around the church, main square and market. This is where local Tz'utujil life happens, with food stalls and everyday shops instead of tourist cafés. The walk up from the lake is steep, and church and street sounds start early in the morning.

San Juan Road

Good for quiet, nature lovers, yoga and wellness

Along the road out of town towards San Juan La Laguna, stays are more spread out, with gardens and open lake views. It suits travellers who want peace and easy access to San Juan's galleries and weaving co-ops. You will often need a tuk-tuk to reach the centre, and the road is dark to walk at night.
