Food to try in Honduras

Baleada

A thick flour tortilla folded over refried beans, crumbled cheese and cream, often with egg or avocado added. It is eaten across the country, at breakfast or as a cheap snack from street stalls.

Sopa de caracol

Conch soup cooked in coconut milk with green plantain, yuca and spices. Look for it on the Caribbean coast and the Bay Islands, where seafood and coconut dominate local cooking.

Tapado

A Garifuna seafood stew of fish, crab or shrimp simmered in coconut milk with plantain and yuca. It is best tried in Garifuna villages and towns along the Caribbean coast.

Plato típico

A large lunch plate of grilled beef with beans, rice, fried plantain, cheese, cream and tortillas. It is served in small local restaurants (comedores) throughout Honduras, usually at midday.

Yuca con chicharrón

Boiled yuca topped with crispy fried pork, pickled cabbage salad and tomato sauce. It is a common street food and market dish, often sold wrapped in a banana leaf.

Horchata

A sweet, milky cold drink made from ground rice or morro seeds and flavoured with cinnamon. It is sold at markets, food stalls and cafés, and drunk with meals or on hot afternoons.
