About Sighnaghi

Sighnaghi is a small town in Georgia with a population of about 1485. Most sights sit in the compact Old Town: the Sighnaghi Town Walls, the Sighnaghi Museum, the Church of St George, Erekle II Square and Pheasant's Tears. Bodbe Monastery and St Nino's Spring are in the Bodbe area. Stay near the Town Walls for views and quiet, in Bodbe for a rural stay, or in Tsnori if you drive and want a practical, budget base. The best months are June, August and September.

How many days do you need in Sighnaghi?

Plan on a full day. Each Old Town sight takes 30 minutes to 2 hours. Bodbe Monastery takes 1–2 hours and St Nino's Spring about 1 hour. Stay a night if you prefer a slower pace.

Top attractions in Sighnaghi

  1. 1Sighnaghi Town Walls

    1–2 hours

    Old Town

The old defensive walls and towers wrap around the hill town. You can walk sections of the wall and climb some towers for wide views over the Alazani Valley to the Greater Caucasus. Go in the early morning or late afternoon for the clearest light.

  2. 2Bodbe Monastery

    1–2 hours

    Bodbe

A working convent just outside town and one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Georgia. It holds the grave of St Nino, who brought Christianity to Georgia. Its gardens overlook the Alazani Valley. Dress modestly, and women should cover their heads.

  3. 3St Nino's Spring

    1 hour

    Bodbe

A small chapel and holy spring below Bodbe Monastery, reached by a long, steep stairway through the woods. Pilgrims bathe in the cold spring water. The climb back up is tiring, so allow time and bring water.

  4. 4Sighnaghi Museum

    1–2 hours

    Old Town

A modern branch of the Georgian National Museum. It covers the archaeology and history of the Kakheti region. Its main draw is a room of paintings by Niko Pirosmani, Georgia's best-known naive artist, who was born nearby.

  5. 5Church of St George

    30 minutes

    Old Town

A stone church near the town walls, with a separate bell tower. It is a quiet stop during a walk through the old town, and the grounds give views over the valley.

  6. 6Erekle II Square

    30 minutes–1 hour

    Old Town

The main square of Sighnaghi, lined with restored houses with carved wooden balconies. It is a good starting point for walks along the cobbled lanes, and cafés and wine bars are close by.

  7. 7Pheasant's Tears

    1–2 hours

    Old Town

A well-known winery and restaurant in the town centre. It makes natural wine in qvevri, the clay jars used in traditional Georgian winemaking. Tastings with local food are an easy way to learn about Kakheti wine.

  8. 8Sighnaghi Wedding House

    30 minutes

    Old Town

Sighnaghi calls itself the 'City of Love', and couples come here to marry quickly with little paperwork. It is only worth a short look unless you plan to marry, but it helps explain the town's romantic reputation.

Where to stay in Sighnaghi

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Town Walls

Good for views, quiet, photographers

The upper streets along the old fortress walls and towers are mostly guesthouses with gardens and wide views over the Alazani Valley to the Caucasus Mountains. Evenings are calm, and you can walk the walls early before day visitors arrive. It is a steep climb back from the centre, and there are fewer places to eat nearby.

Bodbe

Good for pilgrims, rural stays, quiet

Bodbe is a small village just south of Sighnaghi, known for Bodbe Monastery and its forested setting. It suits travellers who want countryside calm and easy early access to the monastery. You will need a taxi or a long walk to reach Sighnaghi's restaurants and bars.

Tsnori

Good for drivers, budget, practical stays

Tsnori is a plain working town on the flat valley floor below Sighnaghi, with shops and simple guesthouses. It is easy to reach by road and a practical base if you are driving around the Kakheti wine region. It has little of Sighnaghi's charm, and getting up to the hilltop town means a drive or taxi.

Getting to and around Sighnaghi

From the airport
Sighnaghi has no airport of its own, and no route data is available here. Most visitors arrive via Tbilisi, then continue by marshrutka (shared minibus), taxi or pre-booked private transfer. A hire car also works well for exploring the wider region.
Public transport
There is little public transport. Sighnaghi is a small town of about 1485 people. Tip: take a taxi to Bodbe Monastery and St Nino's Spring, or to Tsnori if you are staying there.
On foot
The Old Town is compact and easy on foot, though hilly. The Town Walls, Sighnaghi Museum, Church of St George, Erekle II Square, Pheasant's Tears and the Wedding House sit close together.

Food to try in Sighnaghi

Qvevri wine

Kakheti's wine is fermented and aged in large clay jars called qvevri, buried in the ground. Try amber Rkatsiteli or red Saperavi at family cellars and wine bars around town.

Mtsvadi

Chunks of pork on skewers, grilled over dried grapevine cuttings. Locals serve it with raw onion at family feasts, called supra, and at outdoor gatherings.

Churchkhela

Walnuts threaded on a string, then dipped again and again in thickened grape juice until coated. It is made after the grape harvest and sold at market stalls as a snack.

Shoti bread

A boat-shaped bread baked on the inside wall of a deep, round clay oven called a tone. People buy it warm from local bakeries and eat it with every meal.

Chacha

A strong clear spirit distilled from the grape skins and seeds left after winemaking. Hosts often pour a small glass for toasts during a meal.
