What to see, where to stay and the best time to visit Helsinki, Finland.

Helsinki is the capital of Finland and a coastal city of about 694,392 people. The main sights sit close together in and near the centre. These include Senate Square, the Helsinki and Uspenski cathedrals, Market Square on the harbour front, and the museums around the Central Railway Station. Töölö has the Rock Church and the Sibelius Monument. Seurasaari island has an open-air museum. The best months to visit are June and August.
We don't have a set number of days for Helsinki. Most central sights take 30 minutes to 1 hour each, so a short stay covers them. Add time for the Ateneum or Seurasaari, which take 2–3 hours each.
Kruununhaka
The white Lutheran cathedral with green domes is the city's best-known landmark. It sits at the top of wide steps above Senate Square, which is surrounded by neoclassical buildings. The inside is plain, so most of the reason to go is the square and the view from the steps.
Töölö
A Lutheran church built directly into solid rock, with a copper dome and natural rock walls inside. The acoustics are good and concerts are held here. It is small and gets crowded when tour groups arrive, so try to visit early or late in the day.
Kaartinkaupunki / harbour front
An open-air market on the South Harbour, with stalls selling fish, berries, snacks and souvenirs. The Old Market Hall next to it is a covered food hall with Finnish produce and small places to eat. Outdoor stalls are fewer and quieter in winter.
Katajanokka
A red-brick Orthodox cathedral with gold onion domes, standing on a small hill above the harbour. It shows the Russian influence on the city's history. The hilltop gives a good view over Market Square and the harbour.
Kluuvi (by Central Railway Station)
Finland's main museum of classic art, part of the Finnish National Gallery. It holds the best-known Finnish paintings of the national romantic period, alongside European works. It is the best single place to understand Finnish art.
Kluuvi / Töölönlahti
A modern public library with a curved wooden design, facing the Parliament House. Besides books, it has makerspaces, study areas and a large open top floor with a terrace. It is free to walk in and a good place to rest and see how locals use the city.
Seurasaari (island west of the centre)
An island museum of old wooden farmhouses, manors and a church moved here from around Finland. You reach it over a footbridge, and the island is also a pleasant forest walk. Most buildings are only open in the summer season; out of season you can walk the grounds but not go inside.
Kluuvi (Mannerheimintie)
The contemporary art museum of the Finnish National Gallery, in a curved modern building. Exhibitions change often and include Finnish and international artists. Skip it if you have no interest in contemporary or experimental art.
Töölö (Sibelius Park)
An abstract steel sculpture of many organ-like pipes, honouring the composer Jean Sibelius. It stands in a seaside park, which is a pleasant stop on a walk or cycle through Töölö. It is a short visit, so combine it with Temppeliaukio Church or Seurasaari.

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.
Good for first-timers, short stays
This is the core of Helsinki, close to the Esplanadi park, Market Square and the main railway station. You can walk to most sights and ferry terminals. It is the busiest part of the city, so expect crowds and some street noise in summer.
Good for first-timers, transport links
Kamppi sits just west of the centre and has the main bus station, a metro stop and a large shopping centre. It is practical for airport buses and day trips. The area around the transport hub feels commercial and can be noisy late at night.
Good for couples, design and food lovers
Part of the Design District, Punavuori has small shops, galleries, cafés and restaurants on quiet older streets. It is a short walk to the centre and the southern seafront. Bars on some streets stay open late, which can mean weekend noise.
Good for budget travellers, nightlife
Kallio is a former working-class area north of the centre, now known for cheap bars, cafés and a young, relaxed crowd. It has good tram and metro links into town. It is the loudest area on this list at night, and some streets feel rough around the edges.
Good for families, quiet
Töölö is a calm residential area with parks, the Sibelius Monument and easy access to the bay for walks. It suits people who want a local feel and peaceful nights. It is further from the harbour and Market Square, so you will rely more on trams.
Good for ferry travellers, quiet
This small island next to the centre has Art Nouveau buildings, the Uspenski Cathedral and a terminal for ferries to Stockholm. It is quiet in the evenings yet close to the main sights. There are fewer restaurants and shops, and it can feel empty outside ferry times.
A creamy soup of salmon, potato, leek and dill. Locals eat it for lunch all year, often at the indoor market halls near the harbour, with rye bread and butter.
Small open pies with a thin rye crust and a rice porridge filling. They are topped with egg butter and eaten as a snack or breakfast from bakeries and supermarkets.
Small local herring, fried crisp and served with mashed potato. Look for it at the food stalls on Market Square by the sea. In autumn the city holds a traditional herring market.
A cardamom-spiced bun rolled with cinnamon and sugar. Finns eat it with coffee in cafés and at home, often as an afternoon break.
Dark, sour and dense bread made from rye. It comes with almost every meal, from breakfast to lunch buffets, and is a daily staple in Helsinki.
A small almond cake soaked in rum or punch, topped with raspberry jam and icing. Cafés and bakeries sell it in the weeks around Runeberg's Day in late winter.
