About Turku

Turku is a coastal city in Finland with 209,633 people. It is not the capital. Most sights are in the city centre, along the Aura River. Here you find Turku Cathedral, the Market Hall and the riverside walk. Turku Castle and Forum Marinum are near the harbour. Ruissalo island makes a good half-day trip. June is the best month to visit. First-timers should stay in Keskusta, around Kauppatori.

How many days do you need in Turku?

Most sights are quick. The cathedral takes 1 hour and the Market Hall 30–60 minutes. Turku Castle needs 2–3 hours and Ruissalo half a day. A short stay covers the main sights. Stay longer to see the museums slowly.

Top attractions in Turku

  1. 1Turku Castle

    2–3 hours

    Port area

A medieval stone castle near the harbour and the largest surviving medieval building in Finland. Inside is a museum on the castle's past and life in the region. Go early if you want the rooms to yourself.

  2. 2Turku Cathedral

    1 hour

    City centre

Finland's national shrine and mother church of the Lutheran Church of Finland, next to the Aura River. The brick interior is calm and simple. A small museum upstairs covers its long history.

  3. 3Aura River riverside

    1–2 hours

    City centre

Walking paths run along both banks of the river through the centre, lined with cafés, restaurants and moored boats. Small free ferry crossings (föri) connect the banks. It is the easiest way to get a feel for the city.

  4. 4Turku Market Hall

    30–60 minutes

    City centre

A covered historic market hall with stalls selling Finnish food, fish, bread and coffee. It is a good place for a quick lunch or picnic supplies. Expect it to be busy around lunchtime.

  5. 5Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum

    1–2 hours

    Luostarinmäki

A group of old wooden houses that survived the city's great fire, now an open-air museum of craft workshops and homes. In the main season, craftspeople show traditional skills. Check whether it is open before you go, as it is mainly a summer sight.

  6. 6Forum Marinum

    2 hours

    Linnankatu, near the harbour

Finland's national maritime museum, set on the riverbank. Beside it are historic museum ships you can board in the warmer months. Good for families and anyone interested in the sea.

  7. 7Ruissalo

    Half a day

    Ruissalo island

A green island west of the centre with oak forest, walking trails, beaches and old wooden villas. There is also a botanical garden run by the University of Turku. Go on a dry day; there is little to do here in bad weather.

  8. 8Sibelius Museum

    1 hour

    Near the cathedral

A music museum with a large collection of instruments and material on the composer Jean Sibelius. Concerts are held here in some seasons. Worth it if you like music; others may find it too specialised.

Where to stay in Turku

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Keskusta (City Centre around Kauppatori)

Good for first-timers, short stays, shopping

The grid of streets around the Market Square and Market Hall is the practical heart of Turku, with most shops, cafés and bus connections close by. You can walk to the river, the cathedral and most sights. The drawback: streets with bars can be loud late on Friday and Saturday nights.

Aura Riverside (both banks)

Good for first-timers, couples, walkers

The banks of the Aura River are where Turku likes to spend its evenings, with restaurant boats, terraces and a riverside path for walking or cycling. Staying here puts you between the centre and the Cathedral area. In summer the riverside gets crowded and noisy into the night, and rooms with a river view can book up early.

Port Arthur (Portsa)

Good for repeat visitors, quiet, character

A residential area of old wooden houses and gardens south-west of the centre, close to the river and the Samppalinna hill. It feels like a real neighbourhood rather than a tourist area. There are few hotels, so you will mostly find private rentals, and the evenings are very quiet.

Linnakaupunki (Castle and Harbour area)

Good for ferry travellers, early departures

The area near Turku Castle and the passenger harbour is the obvious base if you arrive or leave by ferry to Stockholm or the Åland Islands. The castle and the Forum Marinum maritime museum are close. The drawback: it is a long walk from the centre and parts of the area feel industrial, with little life in the evenings.

Kupittaa

Good for train travellers, business, families

East of the centre, Kupittaa has its own railway station, a large park and a modern business district. It is practical for rail connections and for families who want green space. The drawback: the office blocks have little charm, and you need to walk or take a bus to reach the river and the old town.

Getting to and around Turku

From the airport
Turku Airport lies north of the centre. The usual options are a city bus or a taxi. Check current times and fares before you travel, as we have no route data.
Public transport
Turku has no metro or tram. Föli city buses cover the city and reach Ruissalo island. Tip: the small Föri ferry crosses the Aura River, which saves walking to the next bridge.
On foot
The centre is compact and flat. Kauppatori, the Market Hall, the Cathedral, the Sibelius Museum and the Aura riverside are close together. Walk along the river to Turku Castle and Forum Marinum.

Food to try in Turku

Archipelago bread

Saaristolaisleipä is a dark, slightly sweet malt bread from the islands around Turku. Locals eat it sliced with butter and fish, often at Christmas or with a summer lunch.

Baltic herring

Silakka is the small herring of the local sea. People eat it fried, pickled or marinated. Look for it at the old market hall and at Turku's yearly herring market by the river.

Turku mustard

Turun sinappi is a sweet-strong Finnish mustard with roots in Turku. Locals squeeze it onto grilled sausages at summer barbecues, kiosks and market stalls.

Smoked archipelago fish

Salmon, whitefish and other fish from the archipelago are often hot-smoked or cured. Locals buy them at the market hall or eat them on summer trips to the islands.
