About Sigulda

Sigulda is a small town of about 14,784 people in the Gauja National Park, an hour from Riga. It's built for nature and history, not nightlife: castles, river valleys, forest trails and a bobsleigh track fill the day. Turaida suits couples and history lovers, Krimulda suits hikers, and Ragana works for families and budget road-trippers. June is the best month to visit, with the park green and the Gauja River good for canoeing.

How many days do you need in Sigulda?

One day covers the castle, Gutmanis Cave and the bobsleigh track. Two days let you add Turaida, Krimulda and a canoe trip on the Gauja River at a relaxed pace.

Top attractions in Sigulda

  1. 1Turaida Museum Reserve

    half a day

    Turaida

A large open-air site around the restored red-brick Turaida Castle, with a climbable main tower, a small wooden church, the grave of the Rose of Turaida and a folk song sculpture garden. It is the main reason most people come to Sigulda, and the tower gives wide views over the Gauja valley.

  2. 2Sigulda Medieval Castle

    1–2 hours

    Sigulda town centre

Ruins of a Livonian Order castle beside the neo-Gothic Sigulda New Castle. You can walk the walls and towers and look out over the forested Gauja valley toward Turaida and Krimulda.

  3. 3Gutmanis Cave

    30 minutes–1 hour

    Gauja National Park, near Turaida

A sandstone cave in the Gauja valley, known for its walls carved with old names and inscriptions and for the spring flowing out of it. It sits on the walking route between the river and Turaida, so most visitors combine the two.

  4. 4Krimulda Manor and Krimulda Castle Ruins

    1–2 hours

    Krimulda

A classical manor house and park on the north side of the Gauja, with the scant ruins of a medieval castle nearby. Forest paths lead down to the river and on toward Gutmanis Cave and Turaida.

  5. 5Sigulda Bobsleigh and Luge Track

    1–2 hours

    Sigulda

A working international track for bobsleigh, luge and skeleton. You can walk around it to see the curves, and visitors can try a guest ride on a bob, in summer on wheels and in winter on ice.

  6. 6Gauja River canoeing

    half a day

    Gauja valley

Local outfitters rent canoes and rafts for trips down the Gauja past sandstone cliffs and forest. It gives a different view of the valley from the one you get on foot.

  7. 7Artists' Hill

    30 minutes

    Sigulda

A viewpoint over the Gauja valley that painters have long used as a subject. It is a short walk from the town and works well as a stop on the way to the river.

  8. 8Satezele Hillfort

    30 minutes–1 hour

    Sigulda

An ancient Liv hillfort site on a wooded hill above the valley. There is little left to see beyond the earthworks, but it is a quiet walk with good views and some local history.

  9. 9Walking Stick Park

    30 minutes

    Sigulda town centre

A small park with oversized walking-stick sculptures, a nod to the town's tradition of carved walking sticks, which you can still buy as souvenirs. It is an easy stop between the station and the castles.

Where to stay in Sigulda

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Turaida

Good for history lovers, couples, quiet

This area across the Gauja river sits around Turaida Castle and its museum reserve, with forest trails and caves nearby. Staying here means early mornings and evenings at the castle without the day-trip crowds. It is a fair distance from the station and shops, so you will rely on a car, bike or infrequent buses.

Krimulda

Good for hikers, nature lovers

Krimulda lies on the wooded north bank of the Gauja, around the old manor and park, and links to the town centre by the cable car over the valley. It is a good base for walking the valley trails and viewpoints. There are few places to eat, and the paths up from the river are steep.

Ragana

Good for families, road-trippers, budget

Ragana is a small village a short drive north of Krimulda, set among fields and forest near the Gauja National Park trails. It suits travellers with a car who want space and a rural feel. Public transport is limited and there is little to do in the evenings.

Getting to and around Sigulda

From the airport
Sigulda has no airport of its own. Most visitors fly into Riga and then travel on by train, bus, or car to reach Sigulda, since no direct route data is available for this page.
Public transport
Sigulda is small and has limited public transport. Trains and local buses connect it to Riga, but getting between sights like Turaida, Krimulda, and the Gauja valley often means walking, cycling, or using the cable car. A car or bike makes it far easier to reach the more spread-out attractions.
On foot
The town centre is walkable: Sigulda Medieval Castle, Walking Stick Park, and Artists' Hill sit close together. Turaida, Krimulda, and Gutmanis Cave are farther out in Gauja National Park and need a longer walk, bike, or the cable car to reach.

Food to try in Sigulda

Rupjmaize (dark rye bread)

Dense, slightly sweet black rye bread is served with most Latvian meals. In Sigulda you will find it in cafés and guesthouses, often with butter or alongside soup.

Grey peas with bacon

Pelēkie zirņi are large grey peas cooked with fried bacon and onion. It is a traditional Latvian dish, often eaten in winter and around Christmas.

Aukstā zupa (cold beet soup)

A bright pink cold soup of beetroot, kefir, cucumber, dill and egg, usually served with hot potatoes. Latvians eat it on warm summer days.

Jāņu siers (caraway cheese)

A fresh cheese flavoured with caraway seeds. It is closely linked to Jāņi, the Latvian Midsummer festival, when families eat it outdoors with beer and rye bread.

Forest mushrooms and berries

Sigulda sits in the forests of the Gauja valley, and picking mushrooms, bilberries and lingonberries is a common local pastime. Look for them in seasonal soups, sauces and desserts.
