About Basel

Basel sits on the Rhine where Switzerland, Germany and France meet, and the river shapes daily life here, with ferries crossing it and locals swimming in it in summer. The Old Town (Grossbasel) has the Basel Minster and Marktplatz, while Kleinbasel across the water is the livelier side for food and nightlife. Basel is also a strong museum city, with the Kunstmuseum Basel and Fondation Beyeler among its highlights. August and September are the best months to visit, with warm days and river swimming still possible.

How many days do you need in Basel?

Two to three days cover the Old Town, the Rhine Promenade, and one or two major museums like the Kunstmuseum Basel or Fondation Beyeler, with time left for a half-day trip to Vitra Campus or Basel Zoo.

Top attractions in Basel

  1. 1Basel Minster

    1–2 hours

    Old Town (Grossbasel)

Basel's red sandstone cathedral, with colourful roof tiles and twin towers, stands on a hill above the Rhine. You can climb a tower for views over the city and river. The Pfalz terrace behind it is a good place to watch the river.

  2. 2Kunstmuseum Basel

    2–4 hours

    St. Alban

This is one of the most important public art collections in Switzerland. It covers works from the old masters to modern and contemporary art. It is spread across a main building and a newer extension across the street.

  3. 3Fondation Beyeler

    2–3 hours

    Riehen

This private museum of modern art sits in a park on the edge of Basel and is easy to reach by tram. The building was designed by Renzo Piano. Its large temporary exhibitions draw visitors from across Europe.

  4. 4Rhine Promenade and Rhine Ferries

    1–2 hours

    Kleinbasel and Grossbasel

The riverbanks are where locals meet, walk and, in warm weather, swim downstream with waterproof bags. Small ferries without engines use only the current to cross between the two banks. The Kleinbasel side gets the evening sun.

  5. 5Basel Town Hall (Rathaus) and Marktplatz

    30–60 minutes

    Old Town (Grossbasel)

The bright red town hall with painted walls stands on the main market square. You can step into the courtyard to see the murals up close. The square has market stalls on many days.

  6. 6Museum Tinguely

    1–2 hours

    Solitude Park, Kleinbasel

This museum shows the moving machine sculptures of Swiss artist Jean Tinguely. Many works are switched on so you can watch them clatter and turn. The building sits right on the Rhine.

  7. 7Spalentor

    30 minutes

    Spalen

This large medieval gate was once part of the city walls. It has a decorated tiled roof and carved figures. It's a short walk from the university and fits easily into an Old Town walk.

  8. 8Basel Zoo (Zolli)

    half a day

    Bachletten

Locals call Basel's zoo the Zolli, and it is a short walk from the main railway station. It is known for its gorillas, elephants and well-kept park setting. It is a good choice for families.

  9. 9Vitra Campus

    half a day

    Weil am Rhein (Germany)

Just over the German border, this site of the furniture company Vitra has buildings by well-known architects such as Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid and Tadao Ando. The Vitra Design Museum shows exhibitions on furniture and design. You can reach it by bus from Basel.

  10. 10Basel Paper Mill

    1–2 hours

    St. Alban

This working museum in an old mill on a canal shows how paper is made and how books were printed. You can make your own sheet of paper by hand. The St. Alban area around it is quiet and pleasant to walk through.

Where to stay in Basel

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Grossbasel Altstadt

Good for first-timers, sightseeing, couples

The medieval old town on the left bank of the Rhine, around the Marktplatz, the red sandstone Rathaus and the Münster, puts most of Basel's main sights within walking distance. Lanes and squares are pretty and calm in the evening. The drawback: the streets climb steeply up from the river, and the cobbles are tiring with luggage.

Kleinbasel

Good for nightlife, food, summer river swimming

The right bank of the Rhine is more relaxed and less polished, with bars, small restaurants and the Rheinpromenade, where locals sit and swim in summer. It has the best view back across to the old town and is a short walk over the bridges to the sights. Some streets get loud late at night, especially at weekends.

St. Alban

Good for couples, families, quiet

This small, leafy quarter in the east of Grossbasel has old mill buildings, a canal and a quiet stretch of riverbank, and it is an easy walk into the old town. It feels calm and green, close to the centre. There are few bars or late-night options, so evenings are very quiet.

Gundeldingen

Good for train travellers, longer stays, local feel

A residential district just south of Basel SBB station, with a good mix of everyday restaurants, cafés and shops used by locals. It is handy for day trips by train. The railway tracks separate it from the old town, so sights are a tram ride or a longer walk away, and the streets are plain rather than pretty.

St. Johann

Good for repeat visitors, creatives, Rhine walks

A former working-class district in the northwest, now home to cafés, small galleries and a popular stretch of riverbank near the French border. It feels local and lived-in rather than touristy. It is further from the main sights, so you will use trams more than in the centre.

Getting to and around Basel

From the airport
No route data is given for Basel's airport (EuroAirport). Visitors usually take a bus or taxi into the centre; check current options on arrival, since no official times or prices are included here.
Public transport
Basel runs trams and buses that cover the city well, and small Rhine ferries cross the river in the centre. A practical tip: use the trams for longer hops and the ferries for a short, scenic river crossing between Grossbasel and Kleinbasel.
On foot
The Old Town (Grossbasel) is compact and walkable, with Basel Minster and the Rathaus and Marktplatz only minutes apart. The Rhine Promenade links Kleinbasel and Grossbasel on foot, and St. Alban's sights, including the Kunstmuseum and Paper Mill, sit close together too.

Food to try in Basel

Basler Mehlsuppe

A toasted flour soup with broth and cheese. Locals eat it to end a night out, especially during Basel's carnival season.

Läckerli

A small, hard spiced biscuit made with honey, candied peel and kirsch. It's a classic Basel sweet, sold in bakeries across the city.

Fasnachtschüechli

Thin, crisp pastry sheets dusted with sugar. They appear in bakery windows around the city's carnival period.

Zwiebelwähe

An open onion tart, often paired with a glass of new wine. It's a simple, savoury dish found in local bakeries and cafés.

Basler Eier

A dessert of chocolate-dipped marzipan shaped like eggs. It's a traditional Basel confection sold in local chocolate shops.
