About Mörön

Mörön is a small city in northern Mongolia, with about 134,530 people. It's not coastal and it works mainly as a gateway for nature trips, especially to Lake Khövsgöl at Khatgal, north of town. In the city itself you can see deer stones at Uushigiin Uver, visit Danzandarjaa Monastery, the Khövsgöl Aimag Museum, and the local market. The best months to visit are May, June, August and September, when travel to the countryside and the lake is easier.

How many days do you need in Mörön?

Plan 1 to 2 days in Mörön itself to see the monastery, museum, market and deer stones. Add 2 to 3 days if you're heading north to Lake Khövsgöl.

Top attractions in Mörön

  1. 1Uushigiin Uver Deer Stones

    2–3 hours

West of Mörön, Delger Mörön valley

Uushigiin Uver (Uushigiin Övör) is a field of Bronze Age deer stones, carved standing stones with stylised flying deer, next to old burial mounds. It is one of the best-preserved deer stone sites in Mongolia and forms part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing. The site sits in open steppe outside town, so most visitors go by taxi or with a driver.

  2. 2Danzandarjaa Monastery

    1 hour

    Mörön town

Danzandarjaa Khiid is the town's working Buddhist monastery, with monks, prayer wheels and a colourful main temple. The original monastery was destroyed during the 1930s purges, and the present buildings are a modern replacement. Visitors are welcome to watch morning prayers quietly.

  3. 3Khövsgöl Aimag Museum

    1–2 hours

    Mörön town centre

This small provincial museum covers the wildlife, history and peoples of Khövsgöl Province. Displays include stuffed local animals and exhibits on herding life and on the reindeer-herding Tsaatan (Dukha) people of the northern taiga. It gives useful background before heading north to the lake or the taiga.

  4. 4Mörön Market

    1 hour

    Mörön town

The town's main market sells food, clothing, hardware and camping basics. Most travellers stop here to stock up before trips to Lake Khövsgöl or the countryside, where shops are few. It is also a good place to see everyday provincial life.

  5. 5Delger Mörön River

    1–2 hours

    Near Mörön

The Delger Mörön river flows through the wide valley around town and gives Mörön its name. Its banks are an easy place for a walk, and herders often graze animals nearby. The same valley leads to the Uushigiin Uver deer stones, so the two combine well.

  6. 6Lake Khövsgöl

    2–3 days

    Khatgal, north of Mörön

Lake Khövsgöl is the main reason most travellers come to Mörön, which is the usual transport hub for the lake. The large, clear lake is ringed by forest and mountains, with ger camps, hiking and horse riding around the village of Khatgal at its southern end. It is too far for a quick trip, so plan to stay at least a few nights.

Where to stay in Mörön

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

City Centre

Good for first-timers, short stays

This is the area around the main square and the provincial government building. Most shops, cafés, banks and guesthouses are within walking distance, so it is the easiest base for a first night before heading to Lake Khövsgöl. It gets some traffic noise in the day, and there is little to see once you have walked around the square.

Market Area

Good for budget travellers, supply shopping

The streets around the main market (zakh) are the practical choice if you need to stock up on food, fuel or camping gear before a trip north. You get a real sense of daily local life here. It is dusty and crowded in the daytime, and it can feel scruffy after dark.

Bus Station Area

Good for backpackers, early departures

Staying near the bus station makes it simple to catch shared minivans to Khatgal and the lake, or long-distance buses to Ulaanbaatar. Departures often leave when full, so being close by saves stress. The area is functional rather than pleasant, with few places to eat in the evening.

Ger District

Good for cultural stays, homestays

The ger districts on the edges of town are where many residents live in felt tents and wooden houses behind fences. A homestay here shows you how local families live. Roads are unpaved and unlit, and it is a longer walk or taxi ride to the centre.

Airport Area

Good for flight connections, one-night stopovers

The area near Mörön Airport on the edge of town works if you arrive late or fly out early. It is quiet and open, with wide views of the steppe. You will need a taxi for almost everything, as there are very few services nearby.

Getting to and around Mörön

From the airport
The fact pack doesn't give a route from Mörön's airport to the centre. Visitors usually take a taxi or a pre-arranged hotel transfer, since Mörön is small and has no public bus network linking the airport to town.
Public transport
Mörön has little public transport. There's no metro, tram or regular city bus service for visitors to rely on. Most people get around on foot, by taxi, or by arranging a driver, especially for trips out to Lake Khövsgöl or the Uushigiin Uver Deer Stones.
On foot
The town centre is compact and walkable. The Khövsgöl Aimag Museum, Danzandarjaa Monastery and Mörön Market all sit within Mörön town, close to the City Centre and Market Area neighbourhoods, making them easy to cover on foot.

Typical journey times and fares from the airport and other cities.

Route By Time Price
Ulaanbaatar → Mörön Aero Mongolia and Hunnu Air. This is the gateway to Lake Khövsgöl. The fare range is from a tour agency's Aero Mongolia contract price list, which may be out of date. The duration is an estimate that includes the transfer to UBN airport. In summer, book early. flight 3 h 30 min 110–130 USD ↗

A flat, fried pastry stuffed with meat, khuushuur is a common street food and festival snack. Locals often eat it alongside dairy products at Naadam celebrations.

Tsuivan

This noodle dish is made by hand-pulling dough into strips and stir-frying it with meat and vegetables. It is a filling meal often served at home or in small local eateries around Mörön.
