About Ölgii

Ölgii sits in far western Mongolia, a small Kazakh town of about 40,564 people surrounded by the Altai Mountains. Most visitors use it as a base for eagle hunter visits, the Khovd River, and trips into the countryside rather than for the town itself. The sights are simple: a museum, a mosque, a market, a theatre, and Central Square, all walkable in a day. The best months to visit are May, June, August and September, when travel into the mountains and the Golden Eagle Festival are easiest to plan around.

How many days do you need in Ölgii?

One to two days covers the town's museum, mosque, market and square. Add extra days if you're heading out to Sagsai for an eagle hunter family visit or timing your trip around the Golden Eagle Festival.

Where to stay in Ölgii

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Town Centre

Good for first-timers, short stays, tour planning

This is the area around the central square, near the regional museum and the Kazakh theatre. Most guesthouses, tour offices, cafés and banks are within walking distance, so it is the easiest base for arranging trips to the Altai mountains or eagle hunter families. Some streets are dusty and unpaved, and dogs can bark at night.

Market Area

Good for budget travellers, onward transport

The streets around the main market are busy by day with traders, shared jeeps and minivans heading to other towns and to Ulaanbaatar. Staying here makes early departures and buying supplies for camping simple. It is noisy and crowded in the daytime, and it feels less pleasant to walk around after dark.

Khovd River

Good for walkers, photographers, quiet

The edge of town along the Khovd River is calmer, with open views of the river and the bare hills beyond. It suits travellers who want space and easy walks at sunrise or sunset. It is a longer walk to the centre, and there are fewer places to eat nearby.

Ger Districts

Good for cultural stays, longer visits

On the outskirts, families live in gers and small houses behind wooden fences, and a few offer homestay-style rooms. You get a close look at everyday Kazakh family life, including food and hospitality. Facilities are basic, often with outdoor toilets and limited heating, and the roads are rough and poorly lit.

Getting to and around Ölgii

From the airport
The fact pack has no route for Ölgii airport to the centre. Ölgii is small, so visitors usually take a taxi or arrange a pickup through their guesthouse or tour operator, since the town has no public bus system linking the airport to town.
Public transport
Ölgii has no metro, tram or ferry service. Public transport inside town is limited, mostly shared taxis or vans for longer trips like Sagsai. A practical tip: arrange local transport through your guesthouse or a tour operator, since most sights outside town need a vehicle.
On foot
The Town Centre is walkable, holding the museum, mosque, market, theatre and Central Square within easy reach of each other. The Khovd River is on the edge of town, and the Ger Districts and Sagsai eagle hunter visits need transport.

Typical journey times and fares from the airport and other cities.

Route By Time Price
Ulaanbaatar → Ölgii Aero Mongolia, Hunnu Air and MIAT, about 4 flights a week. Flight time is about 2 h 20 min. Ölgii is 1 hour behind Ulaanbaatar, so the timetable shows 1 h 20 min westbound and 3 h 10 min eastbound. The duration is an estimate that includes the transfer to UBN airport. The fare range is from a tour agency's contract price list, which may be out of date. Some flights are seasonal. flight 4 h 50 min 140–160 USD ↗

Food to try in Ölgii

Beshbarmak

This is the signature dish of the Kazakh community in Ölgii. Boiled mutton or horse meat is served over flat noodles, often for family gatherings or when hosting guests.

Horse meat and sausage

Western Mongolia's Kazakh herders rely on horse meat for protein through the cold months. Locals often dry or smoke it, and it appears in winter meals across Ölgii households.

Mutton dishes

Sheep are central to the herding economy around Ölgii. Boiled mutton, often with onions and broth, is a common everyday meal in homes and small local eateries.

Milk tea with salt

Kazakh-style milk tea, salted rather than sweetened, is drunk throughout the day in Ölgii homes. It is often served alongside bread or dairy snacks as a daily staple.

Dried curd (qurt)

Hardened balls of dried yogurt or curd are a common snack in the region. Herding families make them in summer to store for the long winter.

Flatbread and dairy spreads

Homemade flatbread served with butter or cream is a typical breakfast item in Ölgii. It pairs with the dairy produced by local herding households.
