Food to try in Qatar

Machboos

Spiced rice cooked with chicken, lamb or fish, often flavoured with dried lime. It is a common family meal in Qatar and is widely served in local restaurants in Doha.

Harees

Wheat and meat cooked slowly until smooth, like a thick porridge. It is a traditional dish, often made for religious holidays, weddings and large family gatherings.

Balaleet

Sweet vermicelli noodles flavoured with sugar and spices, often topped with a thin omelette. It is usually eaten for breakfast, sometimes on holiday mornings.

Luqaimat

Small fried dough balls soaked in date syrup or honey. They are a popular sweet at family gatherings and are also sold at markets and food stalls.

Karak chai

Strong black tea boiled with milk, sugar and cardamom. It is sold cheaply at small cafés and roadside stalls across Doha and is drunk throughout the day.

Arabic coffee with dates

Light, cardamom-spiced coffee called gahwa, served in small cups with dates. It is a sign of hospitality and is offered to guests in homes, offices and hotels.
