About Sunny Beach

Sunny Beach is Bulgaria's biggest coastal resort, built around one long sandy beach on the Black Sea. It suits travellers who want straightforward beach time, pools, and nightlife, with the old town of Nessebar just next door for a change of pace. The best months to visit are June, July, August and September, when the sea and weather are warmest for swimming.

Where to stay in Sunny Beach

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Central Sunny Beach

Good for first-timers, nightlife

This is the middle of the resort, around the main beach promenade and the strip of bars and clubs. You can walk to the beach, restaurants and the main bus stops, so it is the easiest base for a first visit. The drawback is noise: music from the clubs often goes on late into the night in summer.

North Sunny Beach

Good for families, quieter stays

The northern end has larger resort hotels, a wider and calmer stretch of beach, and fewer late-night bars. It suits families who want the sand without the party. The centre and its nightlife are a longer walk away, so you may rely on the land train or taxis.

South Sunny Beach

Good for couples, day trips

The southern part sits between the resort centre and Nessebar, so you can walk to the old town along the coast. It mixes hotels and apartments and feels calmer than the centre. Some streets are busy with traffic, and the beach here can get crowded near the access points.

Nessebar Old Town

Good for history lovers, couples

The old town is a small rocky peninsula just south of the resort, with stone streets, old churches and harbour views. Staying here gives you evenings with character once the day visitors leave. Beaches on the peninsula are small, the cobbled lanes are uneven, and daytime crowds can be heavy in summer.

Sveti Vlas

Good for quiet, sailing, couples

Sveti Vlas is a separate resort just north of Sunny Beach, built on a slope above a marina. It is calmer and more relaxed than Sunny Beach, with sea views from many streets. The hills make walking harder, and you need a bus or taxi to reach Sunny Beach's nightlife.

Getting to and around Sunny Beach

From the airport
No airport route data is given for Sunny Beach. The nearest airport is Burgas, and visitors usually reach the centre by taxi, private transfer, or a bus connection, since no specific times or prices are provided.
Public transport
Sunny Beach has little formal public transport. Visitors mostly rely on local buses linking Sunny Beach, Nessebar, and Sveti Vlas, plus taxis. A practical tip: agree on a taxi fare before you get in, since there are no metered numbers given here.
On foot
Central Sunny Beach is flat and walkable, with the main beach, resorts, and nightlife close together. Nessebar Old Town is compact too, so the Ancient City, Church of St Stephen, and Church of Christ Pantocrator sit within easy walking distance of each other.

Food to try in Sunny Beach

Shopska salad

Bulgaria's best-known salad of chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and onion, topped with grated white brined cheese. It is served as a starter in almost every restaurant along the beach, often with a glass of rakia.

Tarator

A cold soup of yogurt, cucumber, garlic, dill and water, sometimes with walnuts. Locals eat it in the hot summer months as a light, cooling lunch or starter.

Tsatsa (fried sprats)

Small Black Sea fish, coated in flour and fried whole until crisp. A typical Bulgarian coast snack, eaten by the plate with lemon and a cold beer at seaside taverns.

Grilled Black Sea fish

Fish from the Black Sea, such as turbot (kalkan) or mackerel, grilled simply with oil and lemon. Look for it at fish restaurants on the coast, especially in the evening.

Kebapche and kyufte

Grilled minced-meat dishes: kebapche is a long spiced sausage shape, kyufte a flat round patty. Both come off the charcoal grill at mehanas (traditional taverns), usually with fries and salad.

Banitsa

A flaky filo pastry filled with eggs and white cheese. Bulgarians eat it for breakfast, often with ayran or boza, and you can buy it fresh from bakeries in the morning.
