About Kyrenia

Kyrenia sits on the north coast of Cyprus, with a small harbour, a castle, and the Kyrenia Mountains rising behind the town. It's a mixed destination: part seaside town, part base for day trips to castles and villages like Bellapais and Karmi. Good months to visit are April, June, September and October, when temperatures are milder than high summer. The town itself has around 33207 residents, so it feels compact and easy to walk around, especially near the Old Harbour.

How many days do you need in Kyrenia?

Plan on 2 to 3 days. That's enough time to see the harbour, Kyrenia Castle, and the Icon Museum, plus a day trip up into the mountains for Bellapais Abbey and St. Hilarion or Buffavento Castle.

Top attractions in Kyrenia

  1. 1Kyrenia Castle

    2 hours

    Old Harbour

A large Venetian-era fortress that guards the east side of the old harbour, with walls and towers you can walk on for views over the sea. Inside is the Shipwreck Museum, which displays the remains of an ancient Greek merchant ship found off the coast.

  2. 2Kyrenia Harbour

    1–2 hours

    Old Town

A small horseshoe-shaped harbour lined with old stone warehouses that are now cafés and restaurants. It is the centre of town life and the starting point for boat trips along the coast. It is a good place for an evening walk.

  3. 3Bellapais Abbey

    1–2 hours

    Bellapais village

The ruins of a Gothic abbey in a hillside village above Kyrenia. You can see the cloister, a large refectory and views down to the coast. The village around it is quiet and good for a slow walk.

  4. 4St. Hilarion Castle

    2–3 hours

    Kyrenia Mountains

A mountain-top castle built on rocky peaks above the town, reached by a winding road. Paths and steep steps lead up through several levels of ruins to wide views over the coast. Bring good shoes and water, because the climb is steep and exposed to the sun.

  5. 5Buffavento Castle

    Half a day

    Kyrenia Mountains

The highest of the castles in the Kyrenia Mountains, sitting on a ridge with views of both the north coast and the central plain. The last part is a steep walk on a rough path. It is quieter than St. Hilarion.

  6. 6Archangel Michael Icon Museum

    30–60 minutes

    Old Town

A white church on a small hill above the harbour, now used as a museum of religious icons. The building is also a good viewpoint over the harbour roofs.

  7. 7Alagadi Turtle Beach

    Half a day

    East of Kyrenia

A protected stretch of sandy beach east of town where sea turtles come ashore to nest. There are rules to protect the nests, so follow the signs. It is a good stop for swimming on a quieter, less built-up part of the coast.

  8. 8Karmi Village

    1–2 hours

    Kyrenia Mountains

A restored hillside village, also signposted as Karaman, with narrow lanes, stone houses and flowers. It has a few small restaurants and views down to the coast, and makes an easy trip from town.

Where to stay in Kyrenia

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Kyrenia Old Harbour

Good for first-timers, couples, evenings out

This is the historic heart of Kyrenia, with a horseshoe-shaped harbour, the castle, and narrow lanes of old stone houses. You can walk to restaurants, boat trips and the main sights. Restaurants and bars around the water get loud in the evenings, and parking nearby is hard to find.

Kyrenia Town Centre

Good for budget travellers, public transport users

The modern centre just inland from the harbour has shops, supermarkets, banks and the main bus and minibus stops. It is practical and within walking distance of the old harbour. It feels busy and built-up, with traffic noise and few sea views.

Bellapais

Good for couples, quiet, views

A hillside village south-east of town, known for its ruined Gothic abbey and views over the coast. It is calm and green, with a handful of village restaurants. The road up is steep and winding, and you will need a car or taxi to reach the beaches and the harbour.

Karaoğlanoğlu

Good for families, beach time

A coastal area west of the town centre with seafront resort hotels, small beaches and a promenade. It is quieter than the centre but still close to it by car or minibus. The main coast road runs through it, so some places get traffic noise.

Alsancak

Good for families, longer stays

A relaxed residential area further west, with beaches, local restaurants and holiday apartments near the foot of the mountains. It suits people who want space and a slower pace. It is spread out, so walking to shops or the sea is not always easy, and the old harbour is a drive away.

Çatalköy

Good for quiet, self-caterers, drivers

A mostly residential area east of Kyrenia with villas, rocky coves and a few beach clubs. It is peaceful and has mountain and sea views. Evening options are limited, and you will need a car for most trips.

Getting to and around Kyrenia

From the airport
Kyrenia has no airport of its own, so visitors usually fly into Ercan or Larnaca and continue by taxi, private transfer or bus, since no direct timed route to Kyrenia from either airport is listed here.
Public transport
There is little formal public transport in Kyrenia. Buses connect it to other towns, including a 40-minute service from Nicosia and a 1-hour-15-minute bus to Famagusta costing 350 TRY. Within the town, most visitors walk or use taxis, so check bus times in advance since schedules can be limited.
On foot
The Old Harbour and Old Town are compact and walkable, with Kyrenia Castle, Kyrenia Harbour and the Icon Museum close together. Bellapais, St. Hilarion and other mountain sights need transport.

Day trips from Kyrenia

Places within 2½ hours by train, bus, ferry or car.

  • Famagusta

    bus · 350 TRY

Dolmuş (shared minibus) in Northern Cyprus. It leaves from the Kombos stop in Kyrenia between about 09:00 and 18:00. The fare was 350 TL in January 2026. Book 1.5–2 hours ahead or the day before. Pay in Turkish lira.

    1 h 15 min
  • Nicosia

    bus

Run by KIBHAS and VirgoBus in Northern Cyprus. Buses use the north Nicosia bus terminal. The north has no single official timetable site, and I could not confirm the current fare. Pay in Turkish lira. The 40-minute time is my estimate; the source did not confirm it. From south Nicosia, cross on foot at the Ledra Street checkpoint and bring your passport.

Food to try in Kyrenia

Halloumi cheese

This firm, salty cheese is grilled or fried and served as a starter or side dish. You will find it on almost every taverna menu in Kyrenia's harbour area.

Souvlaki

Skewers of grilled pork or chicken are a common lunch and dinner choice. Locals often eat them wrapped in flatbread with salad and yoghurt sauce.

Meze

A long sequence of small dishes, from dips to grilled meats, meze is a shared meal for groups. It suits a relaxed evening out at a harbourside restaurant.

Şeftali kebab

These are minced lamb or pork patties wrapped in caul fat and grilled over charcoal. It is a popular street food and casual dinner option in the old town.

Molehiya

This is a green, slightly thick stew made from jute leaves, usually cooked with chicken or lamb. It is a home-style dish often served with rice.

Cyprus delight (lokum)

A sweet, chewy confection flavoured with rosewater or citrus, often dusted with powdered sugar. It makes a common after-dinner treat or small gift bought from local shops.
