What to see, where to stay and the best time to visit Nicosia, Cyprus.

Nicosia is the capital of Cyprus, with about 56,848 people. It sits inland rather than on the coast. Visitors come for history packed into a small area: the Venetian Walls, the Cyprus Museum and Ledra Street in the Old Town, and Büyük Han, Selimiye Mosque and the Bedesten in North Nicosia. The best months to go are March, April, November and December. Laiki Geitonia suits first-timers, and Faneromeni has the nightlife.
A short stay covers the main sights. Most take 1–2 hours each, and the Cyprus Museum needs 2–3 hours. Give the Old Town and North Nicosia their own time, and add more if you like slow walks in Arab Ahmet.
Old Town
Star-shaped Venetian walls with heart-shaped bastions still ring the old city, which is now split between the south and the north. You can walk or cycle along parts of the moat, where there are parks and paths. The walls help you understand how the old city fits together.
Old Town
The island's main archaeological museum covers Cyprus from prehistory to the Roman period. Highlights include a large group of terracotta figures and fine bronze and marble statues. If you only see one museum in Nicosia, make it this one.
Old Town
The main pedestrian shopping street of the old city leads north to a crossing point into North Nicosia. You can walk through on foot if you show your passport or ID card at both checkpoints. It is the easiest way to see both sides of the divided capital in one day.
North Nicosia
This Ottoman caravanserai has a courtyard with a small mosque in the middle and two floors of arched rooms around it. Today it holds craft shops and cafés. It is a quiet place for a Turkish coffee after crossing from Ledra Street.
North Nicosia
A Gothic cathedral from the Lusignan era that was turned into a mosque under Ottoman rule, with minarets added to its towers. The mix of French Gothic stonework and Islamic use makes it one of the most unusual buildings in Cyprus. Dress modestly and avoid visiting during prayer times.
North Nicosia
A former Byzantine and Gothic church next to Selimiye Mosque that later served as an Ottoman covered market. It has been restored and now hosts cultural events and occasional Sufi music performances.
Old Town
Located next to the Archbishop's Palace, this museum holds one of the largest collections of Byzantine icons on the island. The neighbouring St John's Cathedral has walls fully covered in painted scenes and is worth a short visit too.
Laiki Geitonia
A museum about the history of Nicosia itself, from early times to the modern city. Exhibits include maps, costumes, pottery and everyday objects, and they give good context before you walk the old town.
Old Town
A small restored quarter of narrow lanes and traditional stone houses near the walls. It has tavernas, craft shops and cafés and is a pleasant place to stop for a meal.
Old Town
An Ottoman bathhouse beside the Omerye Mosque, built on the site of an older church. It has been restored and still works as a hammam, so you can go for a traditional steam bath and scrub.

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.
Good for first-timers, short stays
A small pedestrian quarter of restored stone houses just inside the Venetian walls, near Eleftheria Square. You can walk to Ledra Street, the museums and the checkpoint to the north side in minutes. The drawback is that many cafés and shops here are aimed at tourists.
Good for nightlife, young travellers, culture
The area around Faneromeni Church and Onasagorou Street is the social heart of the old town, with bars, cafés and small galleries in old buildings. It is lively in the evenings and central for sightseeing. Expect noise late at night, especially at weekends.
Good for couples, quiet, architecture lovers
A calm residential quarter in the eastern old town, close to the Green Line, with restored houses and narrow lanes. It feels like a real neighbourhood rather than a tourist zone. Evenings are very quiet, some streets still have empty or run-down buildings, and you will walk further for shops and restaurants.
Good for slow travellers, photographers
A historic quarter in the western old town, with Ottoman-era houses, an old mosque and a quiet, lived-in feel. It is a good base if you like wandering and want to stay inside the walls without the crowds. Services are limited, and parts sit close to the buffer zone, which can feel deserted after dark.
Good for business travellers, shoppers
The modern commercial centre just south of the walls, with shops, offices and larger hotels along wide streets. It is practical, with easy transport and the old town a short walk away. It has little historic character and traffic can be heavy.
Good for curious travellers, repeat visitors
The old-town area around the Selimiye Mosque and Büyük Han on the northern side of the divided city. Staying here lets you explore markets, caravanserais and Ottoman streets at quiet times of day. You need to cross a checkpoint with your passport or ID to reach the southern side, and the north uses a different currency.

Intercity Buses route between Solomos Square in Nicosia and Limassol. The bus runs about every hour from early morning to late evening. A one-way ticket is €5 and a return is €9. You can buy a one-way ticket from the driver. The time is about 1.5 hours, based on third-party timetable data (Rome2Rio).

Intercity Buses route Nicosia – Ayia Napa & Paralimni. It stops along Protaras Avenue. The operator gives the full journey as about 2 hours. There are only a few departures a day, so check the timetable. A one-way ticket is €5 and a return is €9.

Run by KIBHAS and VirgoBus in Northern Cyprus. Buses use the north Nicosia bus terminal. The north has no single official timetable site, and I could not confirm the current fare. Pay in Turkish lira. The 40-minute time is my estimate; the source did not confirm it. From south Nicosia, cross on foot at the Ledra Street checkpoint and bring your passport.

Dolmuş run by İtimat from north Nicosia to the İtimat bus station in Famagusta. The 200 TL fare comes from a traveller's report and may be out of date. Pay in Turkish lira. The 60-minute time is my estimate; the source did not confirm it. Cross from the south at Ledra Street with your passport.
A firm, salty cheese made from goat and sheep milk. Locals grill or fry it until golden and eat it at breakfast, in meze spreads or in pitta with lountza, a smoked pork loin.
Souvla is big chunks of pork or lamb slow-cooked on skewers over charcoal. Sheftalia are minced-meat sausages wrapped in caul fat. Both appear at Sunday family barbecues and in grill houses, often in pitta.
A long run of small shared plates, from dips like tahini and talattouri to salads, cheese and grilled meats. Tavernas in the old town serve it in the evening, and the meal can last hours.
Lamb slow-baked with potatoes in a sealed clay oven until it falls off the bone. It is a classic taverna dish and a favourite for family gatherings and celebrations.
Vine leaves rolled around minced meat and rice, then simmered with lemon or tomato. It is everyday home cooking and often appears as part of a meze.
Small balls of fried dough soaked in honey or syrup, sometimes sprinkled with cinnamon. People buy them hot from sweet shops and street stalls as a snack or dessert.

Plan for more than 1 day to see both the Old Town and North Nicosia. The Cyprus Museum alone takes 2–3 hours. The Venetian Walls, Ledra Street, the Byzantine Museum, the Leventis Municipal Museum and Hamam Omerye need 1–2 hours each. In North Nicosia, Büyük Han takes about 1 hour. Selimiye Mosque and the Bedesten need 30–60 minutes each.
