About Protaras

Protaras is a beach resort on Cyprus's east coast, built around the curve of Fig Tree Bay. It suits travellers who want calm water, sandy coves and short walks to nature spots like Cape Greco. The best months to visit are July, August, September and October, when the sea is warm and days are long. Protaras Centre has the nightlife, while Pernera and Kapparis offer quieter, more self-catering stays.

How many days do you need in Protaras?

The fact pack gives no set number of days, but the mix of beaches, Cape Greco trails and a few short sights like the aquarium and chapels fits a stay of a few days to a week, depending on how much beach time you want.

Where to stay in Protaras

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Fig Tree Bay

Good for first-timers, beach lovers

This is the best-known beach in Protaras, with calm, shallow, clear water and plenty of cafés and restaurants just behind the sand. Staying here puts you within walking distance of the main strip and the sea. In peak summer the beach gets very crowded, and finding a free spot on the sand early in the day matters.

Protaras Centre

Good for nightlife, couples, groups

The main road through town is lined with bars, restaurants, shops and souvenir stores. It is a short walk down to several beaches. Rooms facing the main road can be noisy late into the night in summer.

Pernera

Good for families, quieter stays

Pernera lies just north of the centre, with smaller sandy coves and a calmer, more residential feel. You can still walk or take a short bus ride to the main strip for dinner. Evenings are quiet, and the coves are small, so they fill up quickly on busy days.

Kapparis

Good for self-caterers, longer stays

Kapparis is a mostly residential area of villas and apartments between Protaras and Paralimni, with its own local beaches and supermarkets. It suits people who want space and a kitchen more than nightlife. It is spread out, so without a car you rely on buses or long walks to reach the centre.

Konnos Bay

Good for nature lovers, walkers

This sheltered cove sits south of town near the Cape Greko national forest park, with walking and cycling trails along the coast. It is the most scenic base and the quietest at night. It is far from the main strip, the road down to the beach is steep, and boat trips and day visitors make it busy around midday.

Getting to and around Protaras

From the airport
Protaras has no airport of its own. Visitors usually fly into a nearby Cypriot airport and continue by taxi, rental car, or private transfer, since no direct fact-pack route covers this leg.
Public transport
There is little public transport in Protaras. A bus links Nicosia to Protaras, taking 2 hours for 5 EUR, but once here most visitors rely on a rental car or taxi to reach Cape Greco sights, as local buses are sparse.
On foot
Fig Tree Bay and Protaras Centre sit close together and are easy to explore on foot, but Cape Greco attractions lie further out and need a car.

Day trips from Protaras

Places within 2½ hours by train, bus, ferry or car.

  • Nicosia

    bus · 5 EUR

Intercity Buses route Nicosia – Ayia Napa & Paralimni. It stops along Protaras Avenue. The operator gives the full journey as about 2 hours. There are only a few departures a day, so check the timetable. A one-way ticket is €5 and a return is €9.

    2 h
  • Famagusta

    car

I could not confirm any public transport across the line between these towns, so the realistic option is a car or taxi. This page only lists bus routes in the south. Cross at the Deryneia/Strovilia checkpoint and bring your passport. Hire-car insurance from the south often does not cover the north, so you may need to buy extra insurance at the border. The 25-minute time is my estimate; I could not check it.

Food to try in Protaras

Souvlaki

Grilled pork or chicken skewers served with pita bread, salad and tzatziki. This is a staple lunch and dinner dish in the tavernas around Protaras' beaches.

Meze

A long sequence of small plates covering dips, grilled meats, halloumi and seafood. Locals and visitors share meze in the evening, often over a couple of hours at a taverna table.

Halloumi

A firm, salty cheese from Cyprus, usually grilled or fried until golden. It appears as a starter or side dish in most restaurants along the coast.

Fresh fish and seafood

Given its coastal setting, Protaras serves grilled fish, octopus and calamari in harbour-side tavernas. These dishes are popular at lunch after a morning on the beach.

Kleftiko

Lamb or goat slow-cooked in a sealed oven until it falls off the bone. It's a traditional Sunday or special-occasion dish found on many taverna menus in the area.
