About Kuusamo

Kuusamo is a small town in northeast Finland, built around nature rather than city sights. Visitors come for Oulanka National Park, the Bear's Trail, and the ski slopes of Ruka, not for museums or crowds. It works as a base for hiking, rafting, and skiing, with Kuusamo town centre handy for supplies and budget stays. June and July bring long daylight and easier hiking conditions, making them the best months to visit.

How many days do you need in Kuusamo?

Plan on 3 to 5 days. That covers a day or two in Oulanka National Park, a visit to Ruka, and time for short walks like the Little Bear's Ring or Kiutaköngäs Rapids.

Top attractions in Kuusamo

  1. 1Oulanka National Park

    1–3 days

    Juuma / Liikasenvaara

The main reason many people come to Kuusamo. It has river valleys, pine forest, rapids, sandy riverbanks and suspension bridges, with well-marked trails and wilderness huts. Go in summer or early autumn for hiking. Expect mosquitoes in early summer.

  2. 2Little Bear's Ring (Pieni Karhunkierros)

    half a day

    Juuma

A circular day trail that starts and ends in Juuma. It passes the Myllykoski rapids, the old mill and the Jyrävä waterfall, and crosses several hanging bridges. It is the easiest way to see the best of Oulanka in one day, but it gets crowded on summer weekends.

  3. 3Bear's Trail (Karhunkierros)

    3–5 days

    Oulanka / Ruka

Finland's best-known multi-day hiking trail. It runs through Oulanka National Park and ends near Ruka, with free wilderness huts and campsites along the way. You need good boots, your own food and some hiking experience. It is not a winter hike for most visitors.

  4. 4Kiutaköngäs Rapids

    1–2 hours

    Oulanka

A powerful stretch of rapids on the Oulankajoki river, surrounded by red cliffs. A short, easy path runs along the water, so it suits families and people who cannot hike far.

  5. 5Ruka

    1–2 days

    Ruka

Kuusamo's fell and ski resort, with downhill slopes, cross-country ski tracks, restaurants and most of the area's accommodation. It is busy in winter and spring. In summer there are hiking and mountain-bike trails, but the village is much quieter and some services close.

  6. 6Julma-Ölkky Canyon Lake

    2–3 hours

    Hossa area

A long, narrow lake between steep rock walls, one of the most striking landscapes in the region. You can walk the cliff-top trail or paddle through the canyon in a rented canoe. It is a long drive from Kuusamo town, so plan it as a day trip.

  7. 7Konttainen Hill

    1–2 hours

    Ruka

A fell next to Ruka with open views over lakes and forest. The walk up is short, which makes it a good choice for sunset in summer or for autumn colours.

  8. 8Kitkajoki River Rafting

    half a day

    Juuma

Local operators run guided rafting trips on the Kitkajoki river, through rapids and forest. It is a summer activity only. You must book with a company, and water levels change how wild the ride is.

  9. 9Kuusamo Church

    under 1 hour

    Kuusamo town centre

The main church of Kuusamo town, with a simple, modern design. It is worth a short stop if you are in the centre, but the town itself is not the main attraction. Most visitors head straight to the nature areas.

Where to stay in Kuusamo

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Ruka Village

Good for first-timers, skiers, nightlife

The main village sits at the foot of Rukatunturi fell, with ski lifts, restaurants, shops and bars within walking distance. It is the easiest base if you want everything close by and do not plan to hire a car. Drawback: it gets crowded and busy in peak ski season, and bars can make evenings noisy near the centre.

Kuusamo town centre

Good for budget travellers, practical stays, shoppers

The town is Kuusamo's service centre, with supermarkets, the main bus connections and everyday shops. It is a sensible choice for a short stop, for arriving late, or if you want to be close to the airport. Drawback: it is a fair drive south of Ruka and the national parks, so you will spend time on the road each day.

East Ruka (Itä-Ruka)

Good for families, quieter ski trips

The eastern side of the fell has its own lifts and slopes, and a calmer feel than the main village. Families often like it because you can ski from near your door without the evening crowds. Drawback: there are fewer restaurants and shops, so you may need to drive or take a shuttle to the main village.

Juuma

Good for hikers, nature lovers, summer visitors

This small village lies close to Oulanka National Park and the start of the Pieni Karhunkierros (Little Bear's Ring) trail. It is ideal if you want to walk from your door into forest, river and gorge scenery. Drawback: services are very limited, and you really need a car to get there and to buy supplies.

Käylä

Good for outdoor activities, rafting, paddlers

Käylä sits by the Kitkajoki river, a well-known area for rafting and canoeing in summer. It suits active travellers who want quick access to the river and quiet surroundings. Drawback: it is remote, with few places to eat, and it is not a good base without your own transport.

Getting to and around Kuusamo

From the airport
There is no route data for the airport transfer. The usual options are a taxi, a hire car or an airport shuttle bus, if one runs. Check shuttle times with your airline or accommodation before you fly.
Public transport
There is little public transport. A few buses link Kuusamo town centre and Ruka, but Juuma, Käylä and the Hossa area are hard to reach without a car. Tip: book a hire car early.
On foot
Kuusamo town centre is small and easy to walk, with Kuusamo Church close by. Ruka Village is walkable, and Konttainen Hill is nearby. Juuma and Oulanka National Park need transport.

Food to try in Kuusamo

Reindeer dishes

Sautéed reindeer is a classic in Kuusamo, served with mashed potatoes and lingonberry sauce. It comes from herds raised in the surrounding Lapland forests and is common in local restaurants year-round.

Arctic char

This cold-water fish is caught in the lakes and rivers around Kuusamo and often grilled or smoked. It appears on menus alongside other freshwater fish from the Koillismaa region.

Cloudberries

These golden berries grow wild in the bogs near Kuusamo and ripen in late summer. Locals eat them fresh, as jam, or with vanilla ice cream when they're in season.

Karjalanpiirakka

These rye pastries filled with rice porridge are a traditional Finnish snack, often eaten with egg butter. They're a common breakfast or coffee-break item across Finland, including in Kuusamo.

Wild mushroom dishes

The forests around Kuusamo produce chanterelles and other wild mushrooms, picked by locals in late summer and autumn. They turn up in soups and sauces at restaurants during that season.
