About Naples

Naples is a coastal Italian city of 913,462 people. Most of its main sights are close together in the Centro Storico, the old centre. Here you find the National Archaeological Museum, the Sansevero Chapel Museum, the Duomo and the streets of Spaccanapoli and Via dei Tribunali. First-timers and food lovers usually stay here or in Toledo and Quartieri Spagnoli. Vomero, on the hill, is quieter and suits families. The best months to visit are April, June, September and October.

How many days do you need in Naples?

Plan for more than one day. The National Archaeological Museum, Spaccanapoli, Capodimonte and Certosa di San Martino each take half a day. Shorter stops like the Sansevero Chapel or the Catacombs of San Gennaro take 1–2 hours each.

Top attractions in Naples

  1. 1National Archaeological Museum

    half a day

    Centro Storico

One of the world's most important collections of Roman art, with mosaics, frescoes and objects taken from Pompeii and Herculaneum. It is best visited before or after a trip to the ruins, because it holds many of their finest pieces.

  2. 2Sansevero Chapel Museum

    1 hour

    Centro Storico

A small chapel best known for the Veiled Christ, a marble statue whose thin 'veil' looks almost real. Entry is by timed ticket and it is often sold out, so book ahead.

  3. 3Spaccanapoli and Via dei Tribunali

    half a day

    Centro Storico

These narrow streets run through the old Greek and Roman street plan of the city. Walk them for churches, street food, pizza and the nativity-figure workshops on Via San Gregorio Armeno. They are crowded and noisy, so keep an eye on your bags.

  4. 4Naples Underground (Napoli Sotterranea)

    1–2 hours

    Centro Storico

A guided tour of ancient tunnels, water cisterns and part of a Roman theatre under the old town. Some passages are very narrow and dark, so it is not a good choice if you dislike tight spaces.

  5. 5Capodimonte Museum and Park

    half a day

    Capodimonte

A former royal palace on a hill, now a large art museum with works by Caravaggio, Titian and other major painters. It is far from the centre and usually much quieter than other sights, and the park is a good place to rest.

  6. 6Naples Cathedral (Duomo)

    1 hour

    Centro Storico

The main cathedral of the city, with the richly decorated chapel of San Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples. Go to understand how central the saint is to local life.

  7. 7Monastery of Santa Chiara

    1 hour

    Centro Storico

A large Gothic church with a peaceful cloister covered in painted majolica tiles. It is a calm break from the busy streets outside.

  8. 8Certosa di San Martino and Castel Sant'Elmo

    half a day

    Vomero

A former monastery and a star-shaped fortress on the Vomero hill, reached by funicular. The monastery has a museum and cloisters, and both sites have wide views over the bay and Vesuvius.

  9. 9Piazza del Plebiscito and Royal Palace

    1–2 hours

    San Ferdinando

The city's largest square, with the Royal Palace on one side and a domed church on the other. Inside the palace you can see the royal apartments and a grand staircase; the historic Teatro di San Carlo is next door.

  10. 10Catacombs of San Gennaro

    1–2 hours

    Rione Sanità

Early Christian burial areas cut into the rock, seen on a guided tour. The visit also brings you into the Sanità district, a working-class area with local food and street life that few tourists see.

Where to stay in Naples

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Centro Storico

Good for first-timers, history, food lovers

The old city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with narrow streets, churches and pizzerias on almost every corner. You can walk to many main sights, and the Duomo and Via dei Tribunali are close. Streets are noisy until late, with scooters and crowds, and some rooms get little light.

Toledo and Quartieri Spagnoli

Good for first-timers, street life, budget travellers

Via Toledo is a long shopping street with a metro line, and the Quartieri Spagnoli climb steeply up one side in a grid of tight lanes. You are between the old centre and the seafront, so both are walkable. The lanes are loud and busy day and night, and some visitors find them chaotic after dark.

San Ferdinando and Santa Lucia

Good for couples, seafront walks, ferry users

This area around Piazza del Plebiscito, the Royal Palace and the seafront road is more open and orderly than the old centre. It is handy for the port if you plan day trips to Capri or other islands. It feels less local, and restaurants near the water tend to target tourists.

Chiaia

Good for couples, shopping, evening bars

Chiaia is an elegant district of shops, cafés and wine bars between the hills and the seafront gardens. It is calmer by day and has a lively bar scene at night, mostly with local young people. Weekend evenings can be loud, and the old centre is a longer walk or a metro ride away.

Vomero

Good for families, quiet, longer stays

Vomero sits on a hill above the city, with wide residential streets, local shops and views over the bay. It is cleaner and quieter than the centre, and funiculars and the metro link it to the lower city. You depend on these connections to reach most sights, and walking back up is steep.

Getting to and around Naples

From the airport
Naples airport sits close to the city, and visitors usually reach the centre by bus, taxi, or the Alibus shuttle. No fixed times or fares are given here, so check current schedules and prices before you travel.
Public transport
Naples has a metro, trams, and buses, plus ferries from San Ferdinando and Santa Lucia to islands like Capri. Buy tickets before boarding, since buses and trams rarely sell them on board.
On foot
Centro Storico is very walkable: the Duomo, Sansevero Chapel, Santa Chiara, and Spaccanapoli sit close together. Vomero's sights cluster too, but a funicular links it to the lower city.

Food to try in Naples

Pizza napoletana

Naples is where modern pizza began. Locals eat a thin, soft-crust pizza, usually margherita or marinara, at a sit-down pizzeria rather than by the slice.

Spaghetti alle vongole

Spaghetti with clams, garlic, and olive oil. A coastal city dish, often eaten at lunch in restaurants near the harbour.

Sfogliatella

A shell-shaped pastry with crisp layers, filled with sweetened ricotta. People eat it for breakfast with a coffee at a local bar.

Taralli

A savoury snack made with almonds, pepper, and lard, shaped like a small ring. It's sold by street vendors and eaten any time of day as a quick bite.

Babà

A small, soft cake soaked in rum syrup. It's a common dessert after a meal or alongside coffee in the afternoon.

Frittatina di pasta

A fried pasta cake made with macaroni, béchamel, and ham, served as street food. Locals often grab one from a fryer stand as a quick snack.
