Why visit Netherlands

The Netherlands suits a short, easy trip in Western Europe. The country covers only 41850 km², so you can base yourself in Amsterdam, the capital, and still reach other parts without long journeys. You pay in euros, and traffic drives on the right. The best month to go is September. That is also the honest limitation: our data shows just one clearly good month, so the ideal window is narrow and you will need to plan around it.

  • September is the best month

Our data marks September as the best month to visit the Netherlands. If you are flexible, plan your trip for September rather than guessing at other months. We do not yet have month-by-month details for the rest of the year.

  • A compact country to explore

The Netherlands covers just 41850 km². Because the country is small, you can see more than one region on a single trip without long distances. This suits travellers who prefer to move around rather than stay in one place.

  • Amsterdam as your starting point

Amsterdam is the capital, which makes it the obvious place to begin a first visit. From there, you can plan the rest of your route around the country. Dutch is the official language, so learning a few basic words helps.

  • Easy money and power for Europeans

The Netherlands uses the euro, so travellers from other euro countries need no currency exchange. Sockets are type C and F at 230 V. If your devices already use these plugs, you will not need an adapter.

  • Simple rules for independent travellers

Traffic drives on the right, and the time zone is UTC+01:00. The emergency number is 112. These basics make the Netherlands easy to handle on your own, whether you travel by car or plan a trip without a tour.

Food to try in Netherlands

Stroopwafel

Two thin waffles joined by a layer of caramel syrup. You can buy them packed in shops, but they taste best freshly made and warm at street markets.

Raw herring (haring)

Salted raw herring, often served with chopped onion and pickles, or in a soft bread roll. Buy it from fish stalls and fish carts in towns and cities.

Bitterballen

Small, round fried snacks with a crisp crust and a soft meat ragout inside. They are a standard bar snack, usually eaten with mustard alongside a beer.

Poffertjes

Small, fluffy pancakes served with butter and powdered sugar. Look for them at markets, fairs and special pancake stalls.

Erwtensoep (pea soup)

A very thick split pea soup, often with pieces of smoked sausage. It is a winter dish and is most often eaten on cold days.

Jenever

A juniper-flavoured spirit, sometimes called Dutch gin. It is traditionally served in a small glass filled to the rim, in older bars known as brown cafés.

Know before you go

  • Plugs and voltage: Sockets take plug types C and F, and the supply is 230 V. Bring a suitable adapter. Check that your chargers and devices work at 230 V before you plug them in.
  • Driving side: Traffic drives on the right in the Netherlands. If you come from a country that drives on the left, take extra care at junctions and roundabouts.
  • Emergency number: Call 112 for emergencies. Save the number in your phone before you travel.
  • Currency: The Netherlands uses the euro. If your home currency is different, check how your bank card works abroad and what fees it charges before you go.
  • Language: The official language is Dutch. Learning a few basic Dutch words, such as greetings and thank you, is polite and can help in daily situations.
  • Time zone: The Netherlands is on UTC+01:00. Check the time difference from home so you can plan calls and arrival times.
  • Calling code: The country calling code is +31. Use it when you save Dutch phone numbers, such as your accommodation, so you can call them from a foreign phone.
