About Suva

Suva is the capital of Fiji and a coastal city of about 88,271 people. It works as a government and market town, and you see daily Fijian life here. Most sights sit in the city centre and along the waterfront. These include the Suva Municipal Market, the Handicraft Market, the Fiji Museum in Thurston Gardens and the seawall. Colo-i-Suva Forest Park, north of the city, offers a half-day break in the forest. The best months to visit are June and July.

How many days do you need in Suva?

We have no set number of days for Suva. Most central sights take 30 minutes to 2 hours each, so a short stay covers them. Add half a day for Colo-i-Suva Forest Park.

Top attractions in Suva

  1. 1Fiji Museum

    1–2 hours

    Thurston Gardens

The country's main museum covers Fijian history from early settlement to the colonial era. It holds war clubs, pottery and a large double-hulled canoe. Go early in your stay, as it explains much of what you will see elsewhere in Fiji.

  2. 2Colo-i-Suva Forest Park

    half a day

    Colo-i-Suva, north of the city

A rainforest park with walking trails, birdlife and natural pools you can swim in. It is often wet and muddy, so wear good shoes. Visit with others rather than alone, and keep valuables out of sight.

  3. 3Suva Municipal Market

    1 hour

City centre, near the bus station

The city's main produce market sells fruit, vegetables, fish and kava root. It is busiest on Saturday mornings and is a good place to see everyday Suva life. Watch your bags in the crowds.

  4. 4Thurston Gardens

    30 minutes–1 hour

    Downtown, next to Government House

Botanical gardens with tropical trees, flowering plants and shady lawns. It is an easy stop before or after the Fiji Museum, which stands inside the grounds.

  5. 5Suva Handicraft Market

    1 hour

    Waterfront, city centre

Stalls sell carvings, woven mats, masi (bark cloth) and other crafts. Prices are often open to polite bargaining. Be wary of street 'sword sellers' who approach you outside and ask for your name to carve on a souvenir.

  6. 6Grand Pacific Hotel

    30 minutes–1 hour

    Victoria Parade, waterfront

A restored colonial-era hotel facing the harbour and Albert Park. Non-guests can visit for a drink or a meal on the veranda and look at the old building.

  7. 7Suva Seawall and Waterfront

    1–2 hours

Queen Elizabeth Drive and city foreshore

A walk along the seawall gives views across the harbour to the mountains. Locals come here in the evening to walk, fish and relax. Avoid walking here alone late at night.

  8. 8Government Buildings

    30 minutes

    Victoria Parade

A large colonial stone building that houses government offices and the courts. It sits beside Albert Park and is worth a look as you walk along Victoria Parade.

  9. 9Sacred Heart Cathedral

    30 minutes

    Pratt Street, city centre

A Catholic cathedral built of sandstone, one of the most recognisable buildings in central Suva. Sunday services include singing that many visitors enjoy; dress modestly.

Tamavua

Good for self-drivers, quiet, views

A hilly, green suburb above the city with cooler air and views over the harbour and Suva Peninsula. It suits travellers who want a peaceful base and have their own transport. The steep roads make walking hard, and it is one of the wettest parts of an already rainy city.

Food to try in Suva

Kokoda

Raw fish cured in lime or lemon juice, then mixed with coconut cream, chilli, onion and tomato. As a coastal capital, Suva has good fresh fish, and kokoda often appears on café and restaurant menus.

Lovo

A feast of meat, fish and root crops wrapped in leaves and slow-cooked in an earth oven over hot stones. Families usually prepare it for celebrations, church events and special gatherings, not as everyday food.

Rourou

Young taro leaves cooked slowly in coconut cream until soft and rich. It is a common side dish at home meals and is usually served with boiled taro, cassava or fish.

Palusami

Taro leaves wrapped around coconut cream, often with onion and sometimes tinned corned beef, then baked or cooked in a lovo. It is a favourite dish at Sunday meals and family feasts.

Indo-Fijian curry and roti

Fiji's large Indo-Fijian community brought curries, dhal and roti, which are now everyday food across Suva. Locals often buy curry wrapped in roti from small shops and food stalls for a quick lunch.

Kava (yaqona)

A mildly numbing drink made from the ground root of the kava plant and mixed with water. It is central to Fijian ceremonies and social evenings, and dried kava root is sold at local markets.
