About Puerto Montt

Puerto Montt is a coastal city in southern Chile with 169,736 people, and for most visitors it's the gateway to the Lake District and Chilean Patagonia. The real draw is the mix: fish markets in Angelmó, sea views in Pelluco, and nature just outside town at Alerce Andino National Park. It's not a city built around grand sights; you come here for seafood, water, and easy access to the wilder south. January and February are the best months to visit, with the warmest and driest weather of the year.

How many days do you need in Puerto Montt?

Two to three days is enough to see the waterfront, visit Angelmó market, and fit in a trip to Tenglo Island or Alerce Andino National Park before moving on.

    2–3 hours

    Angelmó

This busy harbour district west of the centre is the city's best-known sight. Stalls sell fresh fish, shellfish and wool crafts from Chiloé, and small upstairs restaurants serve local dishes such as curanto and seafood stews. Sea lions often wait by the fish stalls for scraps.

  2. 2Tenglo Island

    2–3 hours

    Angelmó

A short boat ride from the Angelmó pier takes you to this green island facing the city. You can walk up to a large cross on the hilltop for wide views over the bay, the port and, on clear days, the volcanoes.

  6. 6Monument to German Colonisation

    15–30 minutes

    City centre

Where to stay in Puerto Montt

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Angelmó

Good for seafood lovers, markets, boat trips

This working fishing port west of the centre has the city's best-known seafood market, craft stalls and small boats across to Isla Tenglo. Staying here puts you next to cheap, fresh food and the sea. It is a working area with fish smells and heavy traffic by day, and it feels deserted after dark.

Pelluco

Good for couples, dining out, sea views

A seaside district east of the centre, with a pebbly beach and a strip of restaurants and bars along the coast road. It is more relaxed than downtown and livelier in the evenings, especially on weekends. You need a taxi or local bus to reach the centre, and summer weekends can bring music and noise late into the night.

Chinquihue

Good for drivers, quiet, nature

A stretch of coast road beyond Angelmó to the west, facing the channel and Isla Tenglo, with seafood restaurants and a calmer, semi-rural feel. It suits travellers with a car who want water views and space. It is far from the centre, and there are few shops or services within walking distance.

Barrio Modelo

Good for longer stays, local life

A residential area on the hills just above downtown, with guesthouses and views over the bay on clear days. It gives a sense of everyday life in the city while staying close to the centre. The streets are steep, and walking back up with bags in the frequent rain is hard work.

Getting to and around Puerto Montt

From the airport
No route data is available for Puerto Montt's airport transfer. The usual options are a taxi, a pre-booked transfer, or an airport bus into the centre; ask your accommodation which works best for arrival time.
Public transport
Puerto Montt has little formal public transport for visitors. Local buses and colectivos (shared taxis) run around the city, but routes aren't set up for tourists. Boats from Angelmó reach Tenglo Island. Walking or taxis cover most sightseeing needs.
On foot
The city centre is compact and walkable, linking the Cathedral, Costanera promenade, sculptures and the Monument within short walks of each other, close to Angelmó's market and port.

Food to try in Puerto Montt

Curanto

This is a mix of shellfish, pork, chicken, and potato dumplings cooked together, often in a pit with hot stones. It comes from the Chiloé and Los Lagos tradition and is served as a hearty lunch in local restaurants.

Salmon dishes

Puerto Montt sits near Chile's salmon farming industry, so grilled or pan-fried salmon appears on most menus. Locals eat it with potatoes or rice as a main meal, especially along the waterfront.

Chupe de mariscos

A thick seafood stew made with shellfish, breadcrumbs, cheese, and cream. It is a common lunch dish in the city's seafood restaurants, especially near the port.

Empanadas de marisco

Baked pastries filled with seafood instead of the usual beef. They are sold as a quick snack or light meal in bakeries and market stalls around town.

Cazuela

A broth-based soup with meat, corn, potato, and pumpkin. It is a standard home-style dish served for lunch, especially on cooler days in this southern coastal city.
