1Historic Quarter: Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción
half a day
Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción
These two hills are the heart of the UNESCO-listed old port. Steep lanes, stairways and colourful houses covered in street art lead to cafés, small galleries and sea views. Walking here is the best way to understand the city.
-
2La Sebastiana (Pablo Neruda House Museum)
1–2 hours
Cerro Bellavista
This is the Valparaíso home of the poet Pablo Neruda. It is built over several narrow floors, full of his collections and odd objects, with wide windows over the bay. It is a good stop before walking down through the Open Air Museum.
-
3Funiculars (Ascensores)
1–2 hours
Various hills
Old funicular lifts carry people up the steep hills from the lower town. Riding one or two is a quick, practical way up and part of daily life here. Lines such as Reina Victoria and El Peral drop you close to the main viewpoints.
-
4Open Air Museum (Museo a Cielo Abierto)
1–2 hours
Cerro Bellavista
A walking route of large murals painted on walls and stairways around Cerro Bellavista. It is quieter than Cerro Alegre and pairs well with a visit to La Sebastiana.
-
5Paseo Gervasoni and Paseo Atkinson
1 hour
Cerro Concepción
These are two short promenades on the edge of Cerro Concepción. They give some of the best views over the port, the bay and the lower town. They are easy to reach from the top of Ascensor Concepción.
-
6Palacio Baburizza (Fine Arts Museum)
1–2 hours
Cerro Alegre
An early 20th-century mansion on Paseo Yugoslavo that now holds the city's fine arts museum. The building is as much of a draw as the paintings, and the terrace outside looks over the harbour.
-
7Plaza Sotomayor and Muelle Prat
1–2 hours
El Plan (lower town)
Plaza Sotomayor is the main square of the port area, with the naval headquarters and the monument to the Heroes of Iquique. A short walk away, Muelle Prat is the pier where local boats offer harbour trips past the working port and navy ships.
-
8Cementerio de Disidentes and Cementerio N°1
1 hour
Cerro Panteón
These are two historic hilltop cemeteries side by side. The Dissidents' Cemetery holds the graves of Protestant immigrants, many British and German, who shaped the port. Cementerio N°1 has grand family tombs, and both have views over the city.
-
9National Maritime Museum (Museo Marítimo Nacional)
1–2 hours
Cerro Artillería
Chile's main naval museum is housed in a former naval academy on Cerro Artillería. It covers the country's seafaring history, including the War of the Pacific. The grounds look out over the whole bay.
-
10Mercado Cardonal
1 hour
El Almendral
This is a working food market in the lower town, with stalls of fruit, vegetables and fish. The simple eateries upstairs serve local seafood dishes. It is a good place to see everyday Valparaíso away from the tourist hills.
