About Alaverdi

Alaverdi is a small town of about 13000 people in Armenia's Debed Canyon. The main reason to visit is the monasteries around it. Sanahin Monastery and Haghpat Monastery each take 1–2 hours, and a half-day hiking trail links them. Akhtala, Odzun, Kobayr and Horomayr are also nearby. Sanahin is a quiet base that suits first-timers, and Haghpat suits hikers who want a rural stay. The best months to go are July, August and September.

How many days do you need in Alaverdi?

Plan at least a full day for Sanahin, Haghpat and the half-day trail between them. Add more time for Akhtala, Odzun, Kobayr, Horomayr and Kayanberd Fortress. Each takes about 1–2 hours or less.

Top attractions in Alaverdi

  1. 1Sanahin Monastery

    1–2 hours

    Sanahin

A large medieval monastery complex on a plateau above the Debed Canyon, listed by UNESCO together with nearby Haghpat. Its dark stone halls, library and carved cross-stones (khachkars) are the main reason most visitors come to Alaverdi.

  2. 2Haghpat Monastery

    1–2 hours

    Haghpat

The second UNESCO-listed monastery of the area, in a village on the canyon rim a short drive from Alaverdi. It is bigger and better kept than Sanahin, with fine khachkars and wide views over the gorge.

  3. 3Sanahin Bridge

    Under 1 hour

    Alaverdi

A medieval single-arch stone bridge over the Debed River in the lower town, decorated with carved stone lions. It is a quick stop, and worth it if you are already passing through the valley floor.

  4. 4Mikoyan Brothers Museum

    About 1 hour

    Sanahin

A small museum in the home village of the Mikoyan brothers: Anastas, a Soviet statesman, and Artem, co-designer of the MiG fighter jets. A MiG aircraft stands outside, which makes it an easy add-on to a visit to Sanahin Monastery.

  5. 5Sanahin–Haghpat hiking trail

    Half a day

    Debed Canyon

A walking route that links the two UNESCO monasteries through the canyon and villages. It is a good way to see rural Lori, but paths can be steep and muddy after rain, so wear proper shoes and ask locally about conditions.

  6. 6Akhtala Monastery

    1–2 hours

    Akhtala

A fortified monastery on a rocky outcrop north of Alaverdi, known for the colourful frescoes that cover the inside of its main church. The paintings are the best-preserved of their kind in the region.

  7. 7Odzun Church

    About 1 hour

    Odzun

An early basilica church in a village on the plateau above the canyon, with an unusual carved monument standing beside it. The drive up gives good views of the Debed gorge.

  8. 8Kobayr Monastery

    1–2 hours

    near Tumanyan

Ruined monastery buildings clinging to a cliff above the Debed, with fragments of old frescoes. Reaching it means a short but steep climb from the road, so skip it if you have trouble with uneven steps.

  9. 9Horomayr Monastery

    1–2 hours

    near Odzun

A partly ruined monastery set on ledges of the canyon wall near Odzun. It sees few visitors, and the approach is rough, so it suits those who enjoy a short scramble more than a tidy site.

  10. 10Kayanberd Fortress

    1–2 hours

    near Haghpat

The remains of a medieval fortress and small church on a rocky spur between two gorges, reached on foot from Haghpat. The walls are ruined, but the setting and views are the reward.

Where to stay in Alaverdi

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Sanahin

Good for first-timers, monastery visitors, quiet

Sanahin sits on the plateau above the Debed canyon, and you can walk to Sanahin Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Most of the town's guesthouses are up here, and the air feels cleaner than down in the valley. The drawback is the steep road down to the centre and the few shops or cafés, so you may need taxis.

Akner

Good for quiet, canyon views, self-drivers

Akner is a residential upper district of Alaverdi with open views over the canyon and a calm, everyday feel. It suits travellers who want peace and have their own car. There is very little tourist infrastructure, and getting up and down on foot is steep and slow.

Haghpat (nearby village)

Good for hikers, rural stays, monastery lovers

Haghpat is not part of Alaverdi itself, but many visitors stay there as an alternative base. It is a quiet village next to Haghpat Monastery, also a UNESCO site, and there is a well-known walking trail between the two monasteries. You will depend on taxis or a car for food shopping and onward transport.

Getting to and around Alaverdi

From the airport
Alaverdi has no airport of its own. Most travellers fly into Yerevan and then take the bus to Alaverdi, which takes about 3 hours and costs 1500–2500 AMD, or arrange a taxi or private transfer for the rest of the way.
Public transport
Alaverdi is a small city of about 13,000 people with little formal public transport. There is no metro or tram. A tip: use shared taxis or marshrutkas (minibuses) to reach nearby villages like Sanahin and Haghpat, since schedules are informal and best confirmed locally.
On foot
The town centre is compact and walkable, with the Sanahin Bridge reachable on foot. Sanahin, with its monastery and the Mikoyan Brothers Museum, sits close together, while Haghpat and other canyon sights need a short ride out of town.

Typical journey times and fares from the airport and other cities.

Yerevan → Alaverdi Marshrutka. Sources disagree on where it leaves from: one says the Northern Bus Station, a traveller report says the Central (Kilikia) Bus Station. Reported fares range from 1,500 to 2,500 AMD. The trip takes about 3 h, and up to 4 h in some reports. There are only a few departures a day, so check times locally. A thin, soft flatbread traditionally baked on the walls of a clay oven called a tonir. It comes with almost every meal and is used to wrap cheese, herbs or grilled meat.
