About Hrazdan

Hrazdan is an inland Armenian city of about 52,283 people. It makes a good base for monasteries, a gorge and a large lake. In town, you can walk in the Hrazdan Gorge, and Makravank Monastery sits in Makravan, on the edge of the city. Kecharis Monastery and the Orbeli Brothers House-Museum are in Tsaghkadzor, an area that suits skiers and hikers. Sevan has Sevanavank Monastery and lake beaches. The best months to go are July, August and September.

How many days do you need in Hrazdan?

Hrazdan's own sights fit into 1 day: the gorge takes 1–3 hours and Makravank 1–2 hours. Add more time for Tsaghkadzor, Bjni and Sevan. The Lake Sevan beaches alone take half a day.

Top attractions in Hrazdan

  1. 1Makravank Monastery

    1–2 hours

Makravan, on the edge of Hrazdan

A small medieval monastery on a hillside just above the city. It is known for its finely carved stone portal and decorated floor, and it has wide views over the Hrazdan valley. It is the main historic sight within easy reach of the town.

  2. 2Kecharis Monastery

    1–2 hours

    Tsaghkadzor

A medieval monastery complex of several stone churches in the neighbouring resort town. It is one of the best-preserved religious sites in Kotayk province. The forested setting makes it a calm stop in any season.

  3. 3Orbeli Brothers House-Museum

    1 hour

    Tsaghkadzor

A museum in the family home of the Orbeli brothers, three Armenian scholars. It is a short stop that pairs well with a visit to Kecharis Monastery nearby.

  4. 4Hrazdan Gorge

    1–3 hours

    Hrazdan

The Hrazdan River cuts a rocky canyon through and below the city. Walking along the gorge gives a sense of the volcanic landscape of the region, and it is a good place for photos.

  5. 5Bjni Fortress and Church

    1–2 hours

    Bjni

A village down the Hrazdan valley with a medieval church on a rocky ridge and the remains of an old fortress. The village is also known for its mineral water springs.

  6. 6Sevanavank Monastery

    2–3 hours

    Sevan

Two old stone churches on a peninsula on the shore of Lake Sevan, the largest lake in Armenia. The lake is a short drive east of Hrazdan. The views over the water are the main reason to go, and the area is windy and cool even in summer.

  7. 7Lake Sevan beaches

    Half a day

    Sevan

The western shore of Lake Sevan has pebbly beaches and lakeside cafés that are popular with Armenian families in summer. The water is cold because the lake sits high in the mountains, and outside summer the shore is quiet.

Where to stay in Hrazdan

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Kentron

Good for first-timers, short stays, public transport

The town centre has the main square, shops, cafés and the stop for minibuses to Yerevan, so it is the easiest base for a first visit. Most daily needs are within walking distance. Hrazdan is a working town rather than a resort, so the centre is plain and there is little to do in the evening.

Mikroshrjan

Good for longer stays, self-catering, budget

This district of Soviet-era apartment blocks sits on higher ground above the river gorge. It has local shops and markets, and rented flats here give you a feel for everyday Armenian life. It is less convenient on foot, and you will often need a taxi or minibus to reach the centre.

Makravan

Good for quiet, nature, travellers with a car

This former village is now part of the town and keeps a rural feel, with private houses and gardens. It is calm and close to open countryside for walks. Services are limited, and the area is spread out and hilly.

Vanatur

Good for quiet, families, budget

This mostly residential area is made up of houses and small streets away from the main traffic. It suits travellers who want calm nights and simple guesthouse-style stays. There are few cafés, and you will travel into the centre for most things.

Tsaghkadzor

Good for skiers, hikers, couples

This is a separate resort town in the hills just above Hrazdan, not a district of it. Many visitors to the area stay here because it has the ski area, forest trails and more places to eat. It is busier in the ski season, and it is quieter and has fewer services outside the main seasons.

Getting to and around Hrazdan

From the airport
Hrazdan has no airport of its own. Most visitors fly into Yerevan and then take a bus to Hrazdan, which takes about 42 minutes and costs 1–3 USD. Taxis are also an option, though no fare data is given here.
Public transport
Hrazdan has little public transport beyond local buses and shared taxis (marshrutkas). There is no metro or tram. The practical tip: use the Yerevan–Hrazdan bus for intercity travel, and ask locally about marshrutka routes for getting around town.
On foot
The centre, Kentron, is compact and walkable, with Hrazdan Gorge nearby. Other sights, like Makravank Monastery and Tsaghkadzor's attractions, need a short ride.

Day trips from Hrazdan

Places within 2½ hours by train, bus, ferry or car.

  • Yerevan

    bus · 1–3 USD

These figures come only from Rome2rio, not an operator. Rome2rio gives a fare of USD 1–3 and a fastest time of 42 min, which may be the time by car rather than by minibus. Minibuses leave from the Azatutyun area of Yerevan. The distance is about 50 km. Check the time and fare locally.

Food to try in Hrazdan

Khorovats

Armenian barbecue of pork, lamb or vegetables grilled over charcoal on skewers. Families cook it outdoors at weekends and on holidays, and roadside grill houses around town serve it daily.

Lavash

Thin, soft flatbread baked against the walls of a clay tonir oven. Locals eat it with almost every meal and use it to wrap grilled meat, herbs and cheese.

Khash

A rich broth of slow-boiled beef feet, served with garlic, dried lavash and often vodka. It is a cold-season dish, traditionally eaten early in the morning with friends.

Sevan trout (ishkhan)

Trout from nearby Lake Sevan, usually grilled whole or baked. Restaurants on the road between Hrazdan and the lake often have it on the menu.

Tolma

Minced meat and rice wrapped in grape leaves or cabbage and served with garlic yoghurt. It is a common home dish and appears at family gatherings and celebrations.

Gata

A sweet, buttery pastry, sometimes with a crumbly sugar filling. Armenians serve it with coffee or tea and bake it for holidays and visits to relatives.
