About Yerevan

Yerevan is the capital of Armenia. It is an inland city with no coast. Most visitors stay in Kentron, around Republic Square. The Cascade Complex, the Matenadaran and the Vernissage Market are all in this central area, so you can walk between them. Arabkir is quieter and suits families and longer stays. The best months to go are April and May in spring, and September and October in autumn.

How many days do you need in Yerevan?

We don't have a fixed recommendation. Most main sights take 1–2 hours each. The Armenian Genocide Memorial and the History Museum of Armenia need 2–3 hours each. Many sights are in Kentron, so you can fit several into one day on foot.

Top attractions in Yerevan

  1. 1Cascade Complex

    1–2 hours

    Kentron

A huge stairway of terraces and fountains climbing a hill north of the centre, lined with modern sculpture. Inside, escalators and galleries of the Cafesjian Center for the Arts run up the hill, and from the top you can see across the city to Mount Ararat on clear days.

  2. 2Armenian Genocide Memorial and Museum

    2–3 hours

    Tsitsernakaberd

A memorial with an eternal flame and a tall stone needle on a hill west of the centre, with a museum next to it. The museum explains the Armenian Genocide in detail, and it is key to understanding modern Armenia. It is a serious, quiet place, so plan a slower afternoon after your visit.

  3. 3Matenadaran

    1–2 hours

    Kentron

The institute and museum of ancient manuscripts, at the top of Mashtots Avenue. It holds one of the world's largest collections of Armenian manuscripts, with illuminated Bibles and scientific texts. A guided tour helps a lot if you don't read Armenian.

  4. 4Republic Square

    30 minutes–1 hour

    Kentron

The main square of Yerevan, surrounded by government buildings of pink and yellow tuff stone. In the evening, the singing fountains in front of the museum draw crowds. It is the easiest place to start a walk around the centre.

  5. 5History Museum of Armenia

    2–3 hours

    Kentron

The national history museum, on Republic Square. It covers Armenia from prehistory to modern times, and its collection includes an ancient leather shoe found in a cave in Armenia. Go early in your trip to put the sights you will see later into context.

  6. 6Vernissage Market

    1–2 hours

    Kentron

An open-air market near Republic Square selling carpets, woodwork, jewellery, paintings and Soviet-era objects. It is busiest at weekends, when the full market is set up. Bargaining is normal.

  7. 7Erebuni Fortress

    1–2 hours

    Erebuni

The ruins of an Urartian fortress on a hill in the south-east of the city, the site from which Yerevan dates its founding. There are partly rebuilt walls, restored wall paintings and a small museum at the foot of the hill. It is outside the centre, so take a taxi.

  8. 8Mother Armenia and Victory Park

    1–2 hours

    Kanaker-Zeytun

A large statue of Mother Armenia holding a sword stands above the city, with a small military museum inside its base. The park around it has shady paths and wide views over Yerevan. You can walk up from the top of the Cascade.

  9. 9Yerevan Brandy Company

    1–2 hours

    Kentron

The historic home of Ararat brandy, near Victory Bridge over the Hrazdan gorge. Guided tours show the old cellars and end with a tasting. Book a tour in advance, especially if you want one in English.

  10. 10Sergei Parajanov Museum

    1 hour

    Kentron

A small museum dedicated to the film director and artist Sergei Parajanov, above the Hrazdan gorge. It shows his playful collages, drawings and objects, and it is worth a visit even if you have never seen his films.

Where to stay in Yerevan

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Kentron (around Republic Square)

Good for first-timers, short stays, walkers

This is the city centre, with museums, cafes, shops and the metro all close by. You can see most of the main sights on foot from here. Streets near the square and main avenues can be noisy with traffic late into the evening.

Cascade and Opera area

Good for culture lovers, couples, evening strollers

This part of the centre sits between the Opera House and the Cascade steps, with parks, galleries and many bars and restaurants. It is lively at night and easy to walk from, including to Northern Avenue. Terrace bars can stay loud late, and the Cascade itself means a steep climb if you stay near the top.

Arabkir

Good for families, longer stays, quiet

A mainly residential district just north of the centre, with local shops, markets and tree-lined streets. It feels calmer and more everyday than Kentron while staying fairly close to it. Evenings are quiet, and you will often need a taxi or a longer walk to reach the main sights and nightlife.

Nork

Good for repeat visitors, drivers, views

Nork sits on a hill above the city to the northeast, with greener, more spacious streets and good views over Yerevan. It suits people who want space and quiet over convenience. It is far from the centre on foot and uphill, so expect to rely on taxis.

Getting to and around Yerevan

From the airport
The fact pack has no direct route data for Zvartnots Airport into the centre. The usual options are a taxi or a public bus into Yerevan; agree on details before you travel since no times or prices are confirmed here.
Public transport
Yerevan has a metro line and a network of buses and minibuses (marshrutky) that cover the city. A practical tip: have your destination written in Armenian or Russian script, since route signage is often not in English.
On foot
Kentron, around Republic Square, is the most walkable area for first-timers. Republic Square, Matenadaran, the History Museum, Vernissage Market, the Yerevan Brandy Company, and the Cascade Complex all sit within this district, so you can cover them on foot.

Typical journey times and fares from the airport and other cities.

Day trips from Yerevan

Places within 2½ hours by train, bus, ferry or car.

  • Gyumri

    train · 1000–2500 AMD

Run by South Caucasus Railway from Yerevan Central Station. One timetable lists an express taking 2 h 10 min for 2,500 AMD and regular trains taking about 3 h for 1,000–1,200 AMD. Express trains have run mainly on Friday to Sunday. Buy your ticket at the station; one guide says arriving 30 minutes early is enough. Check the current timetable before you travel.

These figures come only from Rome2rio, not an operator. Rome2rio gives a fare of USD 1–3 and a fastest time of 42 min, which may be the time by car rather than by minibus. Minibuses leave from the Azatutyun area of Yerevan. The distance is about 50 km. Check the time and fare locally.
