About Gyumri

Gyumri is a city in Armenia with 121,976 people. It is not the capital and it is not on the coast. The main draw for visitors is the Kumayri Historic District, the old town, where you can spend half a day walking. Most other sights are in the city centre, including Vardanants Square, the Yot Verk church and several small house-museums. The best months to go are July, August and September.

How many days do you need in Gyumri?

Plan a full day for the old town, Vardanants Square and a few museums. Add half a day for Marmashen Monastery outside the city. The Mother Armenia Statue on the northern hill takes about 1 hour.

Top attractions in Gyumri

  1. 1Kumayri Historic District

    half a day

    Old town

The old centre of Gyumri, with streets of low houses and mansions built from black and red volcanic tuff. It is the main reason most people visit, and it is best seen slowly on foot. Some buildings are well kept and others are in poor repair, so expect a mix.

  2. 2Vardanants Square

    30–60 minutes

    City centre

The main square of Gyumri, surrounded by churches, the city hall and old stone buildings. It makes an easy starting point for walks into the historic district.

  3. 3Church of the Holy Mother of God (Yot Verk)

    30–60 minutes

    City centre

A working Armenian church near Vardanants Square, locally called Yot Verk, meaning 'Seven Wounds'. It is one of the city's best-known churches and still an active place of worship, so dress modestly and keep quiet during services.

  4. 4Dzitoghtsyan Museum of Social Life and National Architecture

    1–2 hours

    Kumayri Historic District

A museum in a traditional merchant's house that shows how Gyumri families lived and how the city was built. It gives useful background before or after walking the old streets.

  5. 5Sergey Merkurov House-Museum

    1 hour

    City centre

The family home of the sculptor Sergey Merkurov, born in Gyumri, now a museum of his work. He was known for his death masks and monumental statues, and the collection is small but unusual.

  6. 6Aslamazyan Sisters House-Museum

    1 hour

    City centre

A museum of paintings and ceramics by Mariam and Yeranuhi Aslamazyan, two artist sisters from Gyumri. Worth a visit if you like colourful 20th-century Armenian art.

  7. 7Mother Armenia Statue

    1 hour

Northern hill, near the Black Fortress

A large statue on a hill above the city, with wide views over Gyumri and the Shirak plain. Go on a clear day; in fog or low cloud there is little to see.

  8. 8Gyumri Central Park

    1 hour

    City centre

The city's main park, with trees, paths and a small amusement area popular with local families. A pleasant break between museums in warm weather, but not worth a special trip on its own.

  9. 9Marmashen Monastery

    half a day

    Marmashen village, outside Gyumri

A group of medieval churches in a green river valley a short drive from the city. It is the easiest monastery trip from Gyumri; you will need a taxi or your own car, as public transport is limited.

Where to stay in Gyumri

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Vardanants Square and the city centre

Good for first-timers, short stays

The main square and the streets around it hold the key churches, cafés and the town hall area, and they link directly to the old town. It is the easiest base for getting around, finding food and catching taxis. Expect more traffic and some evening noise than in quieter side streets.

Central Park area

Good for families, walkers

The streets near the city's main central park are green, residential and still within walking distance of the centre. It suits people who want a calmer base with space for children to run around. Evening dining choices close by are fewer than in the old town.

Victory Park and Black Fortress side

Good for views, quiet

This hilly area on the edge of the centre has Victory Park, the Mother Armenia statue and the Black Fortress, with wide views over the city. It is peaceful and good for morning walks. The slopes and distance from the centre mean you will likely rely on taxis in the evening.

Railway station area

Good for rail travellers, early departures

Staying near the station makes sense if you arrive or leave by train, especially at awkward hours. It is practical rather than attractive, with mostly Soviet-era blocks. You will need a taxi or a longer walk to reach the old town and most restaurants.

Getting to and around Gyumri

From the airport
No airport route is listed for Gyumri. Most visitors arrive overland instead: trains and buses from Yerevan take about 2 hours and reach the centre directly, with no separate airport transfer needed.
Public transport
Gyumri has little formal public transport for visitors to rely on. The city centre, Kumayri Historic District and main sights are close enough to reach on foot, so most people simply walk rather than hunt for buses.
On foot
The centre is compact and walkable. Vardanants Square, the Church of the Holy Mother of God, the Central Park area and the Kumayri Historic District all sit close together, making a half-day walk easy without transport.
