Where to stay in Osijek

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Gornji Grad

Good for first-timers, short stays

Upper Town is the modern centre of Osijek, with the main square, the large red-brick co-cathedral and the riverside promenade along the Drava. You can walk to most sights, and trams run through the area to Tvrđa and beyond. The main streets carry steady traffic, so rooms facing them can be noisy.

Tvrđa

Good for history lovers, nightlife

Tvrđa is the old Habsburg fortress town, with baroque squares, churches and cobbled lanes a short walk or tram ride east of the centre. It is the most atmospheric base, and its cafés and bars are popular with students. On weekend nights the music and crowds can carry late, and there are fewer shops for everyday needs.

Donji Grad

Good for quiet, longer stays

Lower Town lies further east along the Drava and feels residential and calm, with older houses and green space near the river. It suits travellers who want a local, low-key base and don't mind a tram ride to the centre. Choice of restaurants and evening options is limited.

Retfala

Good for families, drivers

Retfala is a residential district west of the centre, made up mostly of family houses and quiet streets. It is easier for parking and feels relaxed, which suits families and road trippers. You will need a tram, bus or car to reach the main sights, and there is little to do in the evening.

Getting to and around Osijek

From the airport
Osijek Airport has no fact-pack route data for the centre. The usual options for travellers are a taxi or a pre-booked transfer, since scheduled public transport to the airport is limited.
Public transport
Osijek runs a city tram and bus network, useful for reaching Retfala or Donji Grad. For a short stay, most visitors find the centre small enough to skip public transport and walk instead.
On foot
The centre is compact and walkable. Tvrđa, with its fortress, Holy Trinity Square and the Museum of Slavonia, sits close to the Drava River Promenade, the Pedestrian Bridge and European Avenue in the city centre, all reachable on foot.

Food to try in Osijek

Fiš paprikaš

This is a spicy fish stew made with carp or other freshwater fish from the Drava River, paprika, and onions. It's a Slavonian specialty often cooked outdoors in a cauldron at local festivals and family gatherings.

Kulen

Kulen is a cured, paprika-spiced sausage made from pork, a signature product of the Slavonia region around Osijek. Locals serve it thinly sliced as a starter, often with bread and cheese.

Čobanac

A thick meat stew, traditionally made with several types of meat like beef, pork, and game, simmered slowly with paprika. It's a hearty dish cooked in large pots, popular at outdoor gatherings and cooler months.

Perkelt

This is a Hungarian-influenced stew found across Slavonia, usually made with chicken, beef, or game in a rich paprika sauce. It's commonly eaten with dumplings or noodles as a filling main meal.

Slavonski kulen with ajvar

Local cured sausage is often paired with ajvar, a roasted red pepper relish, as a simple appetizer. This combination reflects the region's love of paprika-based flavors in everyday meals.
