About Rijeka

Rijeka is a working port city on Croatia's coast, not a polished resort town. It has a long harbour, a car-free Korzo for strolling, and a hilltop castle in Trsat with views over the bay. The centre mixes Austro-Hungarian buildings with a few churches and a 1-hour maritime museum. June and September are the best months to visit: warm enough for the coast but without peak summer crowds. Neighbourhoods like Pećine and Kantrida give easy beach access, while Sušak suits those who want to eat well and stay longer.

How many days do you need in Rijeka?

Two days cover the main sights: Korzo, the Clock Tower, the Cathedral, the Old Gate, the market and Trsat Castle. Add a third day if you want beach time in Pećine or Kantrida.

Where to stay in Rijeka

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Centar

Good for first-timers, car-free travellers

The city centre around the Korzo pedestrian street has cafés, markets, museums and the old town gate, with the bus and train stations within walking distance. It is the easiest base for day trips and ferries. Streets near the Korzo can be loud late at night, especially on weekends.

Sušak

Good for food lovers, longer stays

Sušak lies just east of the Rječina river and feels more local, with residential streets, neighbourhood bars and quick access to the centre on foot. It works well if you want everyday city life close to the sights. Parts of it climb steeply uphill, and the busy roads near the river can be noisy.

Trsat

Good for couples, quiet, views

Trsat sits on the hill above the city, around the castle and pilgrimage church, with wide views over the Kvarner Bay. Evenings here are calm, and it is far from the nightlife noise. The drawback is the climb: reaching the centre means a long flight of steps or a bus ride.

Pećine

Good for families, beach time

Pećine is a leafy seaside district east of the centre, with villas, pebble beaches and swimming spots along the shore. It suits travellers who want sea access each day without leaving the city. It is hilly, and you will need a bus or a longer walk to reach the centre.

Kantrida

Good for beach lovers, active travellers

Kantrida, on the western side of the city, has a long stretch of beaches, a large swimming pool complex and a seaside path. It is a good choice for a summer stay focused on swimming. It is a bus ride from the old centre, and the beaches get crowded on hot weekends.

Getting to and around Rijeka

From the airport
Rijeka Airport is on the island of Krk, across a bridge from the mainland, so it is not in the city. The usual options are an airport bus timed to flights, a taxi or a hire car. Check bus times before you fly.
Public transport
Rijeka has no metro or tram. City buses, run by Autotrolej, are the only public transport. Tip: Trsat sits high on a hill, so take a bus up and walk back down the long stairway.
On foot
Centar is very walkable. Korzo, the City Clock Tower, Old Gate, the cathedral, Central Market and Molo Longo are close together. Trsat is a steep climb, and Pećine and Kantrida need a bus.

Food to try in Rijeka

Frittole

These small fried dough balls, often with raisins or brandy, are a traditional Kvarner treat. Locals in Rijeka eat them around the winter holidays and during Carnival season.

Rijeka-style seafood risotto

As a coastal city on the Adriatic, Rijeka has easy access to fresh fish and shellfish. Risotto made with squid, mussels or mixed seafood is a common lunch or dinner dish in local restaurants near the harbour.

Soparnik-style savoury pastry

Thin pastry filled with chard or other greens appears on menus across the Croatian coast, including Rijeka. It's eaten as a snack or light meal, often sold by the slice at bakeries.

Maneštra

This thick vegetable and bean soup, sometimes with bits of smoked meat, is a hearty regional dish from the wider Kvarner and Istrian area. Locals eat it as a warming meal, especially in the cooler months.

Fresh grilled fish

Given Rijeka's position on the Adriatic coast, simply grilled whole fish with olive oil and lemon is a staple at harbourside konobas (taverns). It's typically served as a main course for lunch or dinner.
