About Vukovar

Vukovar sits on the Danube in eastern Croatia. It's a small town, home to about 23,175 people, with a Baroque old town, a water tower you can climb, and a riverside promenade. The city carries a heavy history, and several memorial sites let visitors learn about the Homeland War. Beyond that, Vukovar offers quiet streets, a castle-museum, and the Vučedol archaeological site nearby. Good months to visit are April, May, September and October, when the weather is mild for walking.

How many days do you need in Vukovar?

Where to stay in Vukovar

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Centar

Good for first-timers, walkers, history

The old Baroque core by the Danube and the Vuka river holds Eltz Castle, the Franciscan monastery on the hill and most of the town's cafés and restaurants. You can walk to the main sights and the riverside promenade from here. Some buildings still show war damage, and choice is limited, so book early for summer festivals.

Mitnica

Good for quiet, Danube views, memorial visits

Mitnica is a residential district east of the centre, on higher ground above the Danube, and close to the Water Tower memorial. It is calmer than the centre and has good river views. There are few shops or places to eat, and reaching the centre on foot means a walk with some slopes.

Borovo Naselje

Good for architecture fans, longer stays

This planned industrial suburb in the north of Vukovar grew around the Bata shoe factory, and it keeps much of its interwar modernist layout and workers' housing. It is spread out and quiet, with local shops and a real everyday feel. The main sights in the centre are a bus ride or short drive away.

Vučedol

Good for nature, archaeology, drivers

Vučedol sits on the Danube bank south-east of town, around the Vučedol Culture Museum and its prehistoric archaeological site. It feels rural, with vineyards, river views and very little traffic. You will need a car or bike, as there are almost no services and public transport is limited.

Getting to and around Vukovar

From the airport
Vukovar has no airport of its own, so most visitors arrive by road or rail from Osijek or Vinkovci. The usual options are a bus, a taxi, or a transfer by car, since no direct airport link exists.
Public transport
Vukovar has little public transport for visitors. Local buses run but services are limited, so most people get around the centre on foot or arrange a car for trips to Vučedol or Ovčara.
On foot
Vukovar's Old town is compact and walkable. The City Museum, Franciscan Monastery, Baroque centre, and Danube promenade all sit close together, easy to cover on foot in a morning.

Food to try in Vukovar

Riblji paprikaš (fish paprikash)

A thick, spicy stew made with freshwater fish from the Danube, cooked slowly with paprika and onions. It's a Slavonian classic and a common choice at riverside restaurants in Vukovar.

Kulen

A cured, paprika-spiced sausage from the Slavonia region, usually sliced thin and served as a starter with bread and cheese. Locals often serve it at family gatherings and festive meals.

Čobanac

A rich meat stew, traditionally made with several types of meat and plenty of paprika, slow-cooked over an open fire. It's a hearty dish eaten in cooler months across eastern Croatia.

Slavonski kupus (Slavonian sauerkraut stew)

Sauerkraut cooked with smoked meat and sausage, a filling winter dish typical of the Slavonia region where Vukovar sits. It's often found on menus at local taverns.

Fritule and local pastries

Small fried dough balls, sometimes flavoured with local fruit brandy, served as a sweet snack or dessert. They turn up at markets and festive occasions in the wider region.
