About Billund

Billund is a small Danish town of about 6,194 people, built almost entirely around one thing: LEGO. It's not a city for wandering old streets or nightlife. Most visitors come for LEGOLAND Billund Resort and LEGO House, then add half-day stops like WOW Park or the Jelling Monuments nearby. June is the best month to visit, with the mildest weather for a day outdoors at the park.

How many days do you need in Billund?

Two days cover the main sights: one full day for LEGOLAND, half a day for LEGO House, and time left for WOW Park, Skulpturpark Billund or a trip out to Jelling.

    Billund town centre

Where to stay in Billund

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Billund Centre

Good for first-timers, walkers

The small town centre is home to LEGO House, a few shops and cafés, and it sits between the airport and LEGOLAND. Staying here lets you walk to LEGO House and take a short trip to the theme parks. Evenings are quiet, with only a few places open late.

LEGOLAND Area

Good for families, young children

This is the theme park zone on the edge of town, with LEGOLAND and the Lalandia indoor water park close together. You can walk to the park gates, which makes early starts and midday naps much easier with small children. It gets very busy in the main season, and there is little to do beyond the parks.

Billund Airport Area

Good for early flights, short stays

The area around the airport is practical rather than charming, but it is close to both the terminal and the town. It works well if you arrive late or fly out early. Expect some aircraft noise and very little street life.

Grindsted

Good for drivers, budget-minded

A small, everyday Danish town west of Billund, with supermarkets, local restaurants and holiday homes nearby. It feels more like normal local life than a tourist base. You will need a car or a bus to reach the parks each day.

Vejle

Good for couples, city lovers

A larger city on a fjord east of Billund, with a waterfront, modern architecture and a much wider choice of restaurants. It suits travellers who want a city base and plan only one or two days at the parks. The daily trip to Billund takes longer than from any other option here.

Getting to and around Billund

From the airport
Billund Airport sits right next to the town, so taxis and buses to the centre are quick. No official time or price data is given here, but walking, taxi or local bus are the usual options for the short hop into town.
Public transport
Billund is small and has very little public transport to speak of. Most visitors get around on foot or by bike, and a car helps for day trips to Jelling or Vejle. Check local bus schedules in advance, as services are limited.
On foot
Billund town centre is easy to walk. LEGO House and Skulpturpark Billund are both right in the town centre, close together, while LEGOLAND Billund Resort and WOW Park are a short trip from the centre.

Food to try in Billund

Smørrebrød

This is an open-faced rye bread sandwich topped with items like herring, liver pâté, or roast beef. Locals eat it for lunch across Denmark, including in Billund's cafés and bakeries.

Frikadeller

These are pan-fried meatballs made from pork or a pork-veal mix. They are a common home-cooked dinner dish in Danish households, often served with potatoes and gravy.

Stegt flæsk med persillesovs

This dish is crispy fried pork belly slices served with parsley sauce and boiled potatoes. It is considered a classic Danish comfort meal, often eaten on weekends.

Wienerbrød

Known internationally as 'Danish pastry,' this is a flaky, buttery pastry filled with custard, jam, or marzipan. It is a standard treat with coffee at bakeries throughout Denmark.

Pølser from a pølsevogn

These are Danish hot dogs sold from street stalls called pølsevogne. They are a quick, casual snack found in towns across the country, often topped with remoulade and crispy onions.
