Odense, in Denmark, is a city of about 185,480 people and the childhood home of H.C. Andersen. Most sights are in the compact city centre: H.C. Andersen's House, his childhood home, St. Canute's Cathedral, the Brandts art museum and the old lanes around Overgade. The Odense River runs past the park at Munke Mose, and the harbour lies north of the centre. The best months to visit are June, August and September.
Plan a full day for the city centre. H.C. Andersen's House takes 2–3 hours, and so does Brandts. Add half a day for The Funen Village, south of the centre. Allow 1–2 hours each for the harbour or the Danish Railway Museum.

The main museum about Hans Christian Andersen, built around the house where he was born. It tells his life and fairy tales through rooms, sound and light, and has a garden and a separate children's area. It is the reason many visitors come to Odense.

Art, photography and visual culture in a former textile factory. The surrounding square has cafés and bars and is a lively meeting place in the evening.

Denmark's national railway museum, with historic steam locomotives, royal carriages and ferry history in large halls. Children can climb into some trains, and it is right by the station.

Odense's compact city centre has the cathedral, pedestrian shopping streets and most cafés, bars and museums within walking distance. It is the easiest base for a first visit, and the train station is close by. Weekend evenings can be noisy near the bars on and around the main streets.

This old quarter on the east side of the centre has cobbled lanes and small, colourful houses around the H.C. Andersen museum and his birthplace. It is quiet and pretty at night, yet only a short walk from the main streets. Cobblestones can be hard with wheeled suitcases or pushchairs, and the lanes get busy with tour groups by day.

The area around the King's Garden park and Odense Castle sits right next to the train and bus station, on the north edge of the centre. It is practical for day trips across Funen and arrivals by train. It feels more functional than charming, and traffic around the station is constant.

The redeveloped harbour north of the station mixes new housing, harbour baths and waterside spaces with some remaining industry. It is calmer than the centre and has a newer, open feel. Choice of restaurants is smaller, and it can feel windy and empty in the colder months.

This leafy area around the Munke Mose park and the Odense River lies just south of the centre, with river paths that lead towards Odense Zoo. It is green and peaceful but still a short walk from the old town. Evenings are quiet, with few bars or late-night places nearby.

Hunderup is a residential neighbourhood south-west of the centre with villa streets, local shops and easy access to green spaces. It suits travellers who want to live like a local and are happy to cycle or take the bus into town. It is too far from the centre for most first-timers who want to walk everywhere.
