About Skagen

Skagen sits at the very northern tip of Denmark, where the Baltic and North Seas meet at Grenen. It's a small town of 7,394 people, built on fishing, sand dunes and the famous Skagen light that drew painters here in the 1800s. Visitors come for the beaches, the shifting sand dunes at Råbjerg Mile, and the yellow-walled town centre with its art museums. July and June are the best months, with the longest, mildest days for walking the coast and sitting at the harbour.

How many days do you need in Skagen?

Two days are enough to see Grenen, the town's museums and Skagen Harbour, with a side trip to Råbjerg Mile or Gammel Skagen if you have a car.

Top attractions in Skagen

  1. 1Grenen

    1–2 hours

Northern tip, north of the town

Grenen is the sandy northern point of Denmark, where the Skagerrak and the Kattegat seas meet. You can stand with a foot in each sea and watch the waves cross each other. Walk out along the beach or take the tractor-pulled bus called Sandormen. Swimming here is not allowed because the currents are strong.

  2. 2Skagens Museum

    2–3 hours

    Town centre

This art museum shows work by the Skagen Painters, the artists' colony that painted local fishermen, beaches and the special light here. It is the best place to understand why Skagen became famous with artists.

  3. 3Råbjerg Mile

    1–2 hours

    South of Skagen

Råbjerg Mile is one of the largest moving sand dunes in Northern Europe. The wind slowly pushes it across the land. You can climb it barefoot and see open sand in every direction, a bit like a small desert.

  4. 4The Sand-Covered Church (Den Tilsandede Kirke)

    1 hour

    South-west of the town

Drifting sand slowly buried this old church, and only the whitewashed tower still stands. It is a short walk through dunes and heath from the car park. It shows clearly how much the sand has shaped life in the area.

  5. 5Anchers Hus (Michael and Anna Ancher's House)

    1 hour

    Town centre

This is the home of the painters Michael and Anna Ancher, kept much as they left it, with their furniture and paintings. It is close to Skagens Museum, so many visitors see both on the same day.

  6. 6Skagen Harbour

    1–2 hours

    Town centre

Skagen is still a working fishing port. Along the quay there are red warehouses with fish restaurants and smokehouses. It is a good place for lunch or an evening walk while the boats come and go.

  7. 7Gammel Skagen

    1–2 hours

West coast, west of the town

Gammel Skagen is the old fishing village on the west coast, now a quiet area of yellow summer houses and wide beach. People come here in the evening to watch the sun set over the North Sea.

  8. 8Drachmanns Hus

    1 hour

    Town centre

This is the former home of the poet and painter Holger Drachmann, one of the best-known members of the Skagen artists' colony. The house holds his paintings and personal things and gives a quieter look at the colony's life.

  9. 9Skagen Grey Lighthouse (Skagen Fyr)

    1 hour

    Between the town and Grenen

The tall grey lighthouse stands in the dunes on the way to Grenen. Inside there is an exhibition about the lighthouse and the birds that pass the tip of Denmark, and you can climb up for wide views over both seas.

Where to stay in Skagen

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Skagen Town Centre

Good for first-timers, no car

The pedestrian streets around Sankt Laurentii Vej hold most of the shops, cafés and the main museums, with the train station close by. You can walk to the harbour and cycle to Grenen from here. In summer it gets crowded, and rooms book up early.

Skagen Harbour

Good for seafood lovers, nightlife

The working harbour has rows of red warehouses now used as fish restaurants and bars, plus fishing boats coming and going. It is the liveliest place to stay on summer evenings. That also means music and noise late into the night in high season.

Østerby

Good for couples, quiet, art lovers

This older eastern part of town has low yellow houses with red tile roofs and narrow lanes, close to the area linked to the Skagen painters. It feels calmer than the centre but is still walkable to shops and the harbour. Choice of places to stay is small, and many are holiday homes with minimum stays in summer.

Vesterby

Good for families, longer stays

The western side of town is mostly residential, with holiday houses and gardens and easy cycle paths to the beaches. It is a good base if you want space and a kitchen. You have a longer walk to the harbour and centre, so a bike helps.

Kandestederne

Good for nature lovers, quiet, drivers

A small dune settlement south-west of Skagen, close to the moving sand dune Råbjerg Mile and long empty beaches. It suits walkers and people who want silence. There are almost no shops or restaurants, so you will rely on a car or bike for most things.

Getting to and around Skagen

From the airport
Skagen has no airport of its own. Visitors usually fly into Aalborg or Billund and continue by train, bus or rental car, since no direct route data is available for this final leg.
Public transport
Skagen has little public transport beyond local buses connecting the town to nearby areas like Gammel Skagen and Kandestederne. Most visitors walk, cycle or drive. Renting a bike is a practical way to reach sights outside the town centre.
On foot
The town centre is compact and walkable. Skagens Museum, Anchers Hus, Drachmanns Hus and the harbour all sit within or near the centre, close together.

Food to try in Skagen

Stegt rødspætte

Pan-fried plaice coated in breadcrumbs, served with remoulade, parsley and lemon. This is a classic Danish seaside dish and a staple at Skagen's harbour restaurants, where the fishing fleet lands fresh catch daily.

Skagen-style shrimp salad

Called 'Skagenrøre', this is cold peeled shrimp mixed with mayonnaise, dill and lemon, piled onto toast. It takes its name from the town and is a lunchtime favourite along the harbour.

Smoked fish from the harbour smokehouses

Skagen has long-standing smokehouses where herring, mackerel and salmon are cured over smoke. Locals and visitors eat the smoked herring plain with rye bread or onions, often sitting at outdoor tables right by the smokehouse.

Pickled herring

Served in various marinades such as curry or mustard sauce, pickled herring is a traditional open sandwich topping. It's commonly eaten at midday meals, especially paired with dark rye bread.

Rugbrød with cold cuts

Dense Danish rye bread forms the base of open sandwiches topped with fish, cheese or cold meats. It's an everyday lunch choice found in cafés throughout the town.
