Adelaide is a coastal city in Australia and a good base for trips into the Adelaide Hills. Many of the main sights sit close together. The Art Gallery of South Australia and the South Australian Museum are on North Terrace. The Botanic Garden, the zoo and the National Wine Centre are in the East End. Adelaide Central Market is in the city centre, and Glenelg makes a seaside half day. The best months to go are December, February, March and April.
Most city sights take 1–3 hours each, and Glenelg needs half a day. Add more time for the Adelaide Hills, where Cleland Wildlife Park and Mount Lofty Summit add several hours. The Hills suit visitors with a car.
City Centre
A large covered food market with fresh produce, cheese, bakeries, delis and cafés. Locals shop here, so it is a good place to see everyday Adelaide and eat well. Go in the morning for the most activity.
North Terrace
One of Australia's major art museums, with strong collections of Australian and Aboriginal art alongside European works. It sits on North Terrace, next to the museum and the botanic garden, so it is easy to combine with other sights.

City Centre (East End)
Large gardens on the edge of the city centre, with a Victorian-era glasshouse, the modern Bicentennial Conservatory and shaded lawns. It is a calm place to walk between museum visits.
North Adelaide
The city's main stadium for cricket and Australian football, set in parkland a short walk from the centre. Outside match days you can take a stadium tour or do the RoofClimb over the top of the stands for city views.
Glenelg
Adelaide's best-known beach suburb, reached by tram from the city centre. It has a long sandy beach, a jetty and a street of cafés and shops. It gets crowded on hot weekends, so weekdays are quieter.
City Centre (Botanic Park)
A compact, older zoo next to the botanic garden, run by a conservation charity. It is easy to reach on foot from the city and works well for families.
Adelaide Hills
A wildlife park in bushland in the hills above the city, where kangaroos and wallabies roam in open areas. It is a good option if you want to see native animals without leaving the Adelaide area.
Adelaide Hills
The highest point in the hills behind Adelaide, with a lookout over the city and coast. You can drive up or walk the steep trail from Waterfall Gully, and it combines easily with Cleland Wildlife Park nearby.
City Centre (East End)
An exhibition and tasting centre on Australian wine, at the edge of the botanic garden. It gives a useful introduction before visiting wine regions near Adelaide, such as the Barossa or McLaren Vale.

Good for food lovers, return visitors
Just east of the city, Norwood centres on The Parade, a long street of restaurants, cafes, pubs and shops used mostly by locals. It feels like everyday Adelaide rather than a tourist area. There is no tram, so you rely on buses or a car to reach the centre and the beach.
Good for wine and nature lovers, drivers
The Hills have cooler air, forest, walking trails and cellar doors, with Hahndorf offering German-heritage streets and Stirling a quieter village feel. It suits travellers who want space and plan to tour wineries. You really need a car, winding roads can be slow, and the city is not a quick trip for an evening out.
Good for history fans, budget-minded, repeat visitors
This old port area has heritage buildings, several museums including the maritime and railway museums, and dolphin-spotting cruises on the Port River. It is quieter and less polished than the city, with a growing number of bars and street art. It is some way from the centre, and parts feel empty after dark.
