About Cairns

Cairns sits on Australia's tropical north coast, and most visitors use it as a base for the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforest inland. The city itself has an esplanade with a free lagoon pool instead of a swimmable beach, plus an aquarium and botanic gardens. Day trips reach Kuranda, the Daintree, Cape Tribulation and Mossman Gorge. The dry season from June to September brings the most reliable weather, with August and September often named as the best months to visit.

How many days do you need in Cairns?

The fact pack doesn't give a set number of days, but the mix of reef trips, rainforest day trips and in-town sights like the Esplanade and aquarium suggests planning for several days to cover the main attractions without rushing.

Top attractions in Cairns

  1. 1Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

    Half a day with Kuranda

    Smithfield to Kuranda

A cable car that runs just above the rainforest canopy, with stops where you can walk on boardwalks and see Barron Falls. Most people ride it one way and take the train the other way.

  2. 2Cairns Esplanade Lagoon

    1–2 hours

    Esplanade, city centre

Cairns has no beach in the city, and the sea front is mudflats. This large free saltwater pool on the waterfront is where locals and visitors swim. The Esplanade boardwalk next to it is good for an evening walk and for watching birds on the mudflats.

  3. 3Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation

    Full day, or stay overnight

    North of Port Douglas

Very old tropical rainforest that runs down to the beach. A day trip from Cairns means a lot of time in a vehicle, so staying a night or more is better. Do not swim in the rivers or creeks because of crocodiles.

  4. 4Mossman Gorge

    Half a day

    Mossman

A river gorge in the southern part of Daintree National Park, with clear water over granite boulders. A shuttle bus takes you from the visitor centre, and Kuku Yalanji guides run walks that explain the forest and its culture.

  5. 5Cairns Botanic Gardens

    1–2 hours

    Edge Hill

Free tropical gardens a short drive from the centre, with rainforest plants, a boardwalk and walking tracks. It is a quiet, shaded place for a morning walk.

  6. 6Cairns Aquarium

    2–3 hours

    City centre

An indoor aquarium showing animals from the reef and from the rivers and rainforest of the region. It is a good choice on a rainy day or if you do not want to go out on a boat.

  7. 7Crystal Cascades

    1–2 hours

    Redlynch

A series of waterfalls and natural swimming holes in the rainforest, a short drive from the city. It is a popular local swimming spot. After heavy rain the water can rise fast, so do not swim then.

Where to stay in Cairns

The best areas to base yourself and who each one suits.

Cairns City and the Esplanade

Good for first-timers, nightlife, reef day trips

This is the compact centre, with the Esplanade Lagoon for swimming, plenty of places to eat and the marina where most reef boats leave. You can do most things on foot and join tours without a car. The drawback: there is no swimming beach, only tidal mudflats, and streets near the Esplanade bars can be noisy late at night.

Trinity Beach

Good for families, mid-length stays, beach lovers

A relaxed residential beach suburb between the city and Palm Cove, with a sheltered beach and a few places to eat along the front. It feels more local and less polished than Palm Cove. The choice of shops and restaurants is small, and getting to the city or reef boats takes planning without a car.

Clifton Beach

Good for families, self-caterers, quiet

A low-key suburb just south of Palm Cove, with a long beach and mostly holiday homes and apartments. It is a good base if you want space and a kitchen. There is little nightlife or dining nearby, so most evenings mean driving elsewhere or cooking in.

Edge Hill

Good for nature lovers, short stays near the airport

A leafy, older suburb close to the Botanic Gardens, walking tracks and the airport. It is a peaceful base with a local village feel and a short trip into the city. There is no beach, some streets are hilly, and it is too far to walk to the Esplanade comfortably.

Yorkeys Knob

Good for boating fans, quiet, budget-minded

A small seaside suburb built around a marina, with a beach and a relaxed, local atmosphere. It suits travellers who want calm surroundings and don't mind a simple setting. Places to eat are limited, and you will need transport for almost everything else.

Getting to and around Cairns

From the airport
No specific airport route data is given for Cairns. The usual options from the airport to the centre are taxi, rideshare, or an airport shuttle bus; Edge Hill, a nearby neighbourhood, is popular for short stays close to the airport.
Public transport
Cairns has little rail or metro transport for visitors. Local buses connect the city centre with beach suburbs like Trinity Beach, Clifton Beach, and Yorkeys Knob. Check bus timetables in advance, since services can be infrequent outside peak hours.
On foot
Cairns City centre is compact and walkable. The Esplanade, Cairns Aquarium, and Cairns Esplanade Lagoon all sit close together, making a stroll along the waterfront easy for first-timers.

Typical journey times and fares from the airport and other cities.

Food to try in Cairns

Barramundi

This local fish is a Queensland favourite. Cairns restaurants serve it grilled or pan-fried, often with a side of chips, especially along the Esplanade waterfront.

Mud crab

Caught in the mangrove creeks around Cairns, mud crab is cooked simply with chilli or black bean sauce. It's a treat locals order at seafood restaurants near the harbour.

King prawns

Fresh prawns from the Coral Sea are sold at local markets and served cold with lemon, or grilled on the barbecue during weekend gatherings.

Tropical fruit platters

Cairns sits in a fruit-growing region, so mangoes, papaya, and lychees appear on breakfast menus and at roadside stalls, especially during the warmer months.

Reef fish and chips

Simple fish and chips using local reef fish is a casual lunch choice, often eaten outdoors near the waterfront or at the Cairns Esplanade lagoon.

Atherton Tablelands coffee

Grown in the hills inland from Cairns, this coffee is served in cafés across the city, often paired with a slice of tropical fruit cake.
